5950x aren't meant for most people. The only way this makes sense is if you need this many physical cores. I run bots on MMOs as a total POS and due to this I need as many cores as I can get. I am currently running over 40 runescape clients on a 5950x. I was running 16 diablo immortal bots on Diablo Immortal PC client with vmware.

Sometimes these processors pay for themselves for some users. I've made my money back selling gold in game.

I am part of a group that develops Diablo Immortal and other game bots. If you google Kryo Diablo Immortal, I'm sure you'll find the information you want.

I feel like once you are dropping $500 for a CPU you could probably go for a new RYZEN 7000 build
If you're already on AM4 and already have a motherboard that can actually handle a 5950x it would be much better value to buy this now and buy the full AM5 upgrade in three years than it would be to get on AM5 now and buy just a CPU upgrade in the same time. The AM5 price to performance cost is simply silly until motherboard costs drop and a 5950x is still more than relevant as a productivity CPU.

I agree with this. 5950X is the highest of the last AM4 socket and this is the processor to stick with 3 to 5 years. I would only make a new box if it's the last processor series for the AM5 socket after. You could get an AM5 mobo and processor but you will not be getting your money's worth. The new 7000 series processors is where it makes sense that you don't need the latest and greatest.

This is great for people that currently have an AM4 motherboard. Not sure if I'd recommend it to someone for a new build. The 7900x would be a better option for most users.

It would be except for the 300-500$ motherboard and 300$ memory

I hope everyone is aware AMD is gonna continue supporting AM4 with some more processors all the way till the end of 2023. They shared a roadmap photo showing their continued support.

Also keep in mind, AM4 is at its most mature point. So you have to ask yourself. If your gonna do a PC build, would you rather have a first generation or the last generation? One that's mature and has the bugs worked out? Or one that is bleeding edge and is gonna run into some issues. Already there's some problems with early adopter tax, first gen motherboards and DDR5 is still crazy expensive and various cpu coolers don't work with AM5 socket.

I personally would recommend to go with the mature platform.

If you're dropping $500 on a CPU, I hope you're not considering a B550 MB. Plus for maybe the extra $300 difference between each gen build you have options to update the CPU again with AM5 down the road.

7900x is $600, requires DDR5 ($200 for a quality set, $300 for the one AMD & reviewers used for benchmarks), cheapest B650 board we've seen is $200, cheapest x670 is $280. Plus factor in a better cooler due to 95c and 230w power consumption.

Ryzen 7000/Zen 4/AM5 simply doesnt make sense right now. Prices need to come down significantly. If youre on AM4, you stay on AM4, if youre building new you build 12th or 13th gen.

Ryzen 7000 platform costs just dont make sense for

exactly why I got the 5900x last year. the most mature aspect of a good generation can be stellar. I don't expect to have to change my processor out for another 4 years at the minimum, and likely can go seven or eight.

Consider that sandy bridge from 2009(!!) is still working just fine in 2022. the only thing it "can't" do is windows 11, but that's because of a microsoft artificial limitation that can be easily bypassed. there's no game at all that it can't play (i5 and up).

FYI a 5800x3d beats the newer amds and competes with new 13th gen intel's.

I have 1800x lol. my MB need to update BIOS to support, how do I go about this? update MB BIOS with current setup, then put in new processor 5950x, and turn it on?

tempting to upgrade to this processor, but don't want to go through installing all the software I used...
i think it really depends on your MB. Some 300 series MB might remove support for Ryzen 1000 series CPU to make room for Ryzen 5000 series. and some MB support USB drive update.

I just ordered a 7700x. But my build is starting from scratch. It sounds like this is a good deal if u just want to update the cpu only and keep everything else you already have.
