The 12 TB is also $189 on Ebay sold by Newegg but without the $17 tax Amazon wants to add on.

nope 8TB can be 7200RPM and even the datasheet [westerndigital.com] lies WD80EFAX is SMR
Quote from PRupp89 View quoted comment :
It appears that anything below the 10TB isn't 7200RPM. Is that correct or is that a typo in the listing?
SMR can incur a performance hit when sectors need to be erased/rewritten.
Quote from sygyzy View quoted comment :
Is CMR or SMR generally preferred for use in NAS?

great anecdote. I've used several WD (Reds) and Seagate (Ironwolfs/Exos) in my home server and have had to replace at least one of each type over the past 5 years. Incidentally I have a WD Green in the same server doing well 15+ years later. I've learned to be brand agnostic, and make sure I have both good local + cloud backup.
my wd green server drives were close to 10 years old when they kicked the bucket but my red drives lived on

If eBay has a location / offices / business entity etc in your state, they charge tax. As of 2023 I believe, eBay will be required by the fed to collect tax on every sale, everywhere.

You countered their anecdote with an anecdote...

I agree backups are a must though – plan for any drive to fail and it won't be a disaster when one does.

They may be out of stock. I ordered two 12s at least an hour ago and I think it said there's only a few left. That was actually why I didn't wait until tomorrow to see if any better deals came round. I'm sure they will now!

Please stop these multi item advertisements!
You make it look like ther is a 10TB for $99 it is just clickbait and if it contimues Slickdeals will be a place I stop visiting!!! Already 30 of the deals are YMMV where one store in the entire country clearanced out one product and someone puts it up here and another 20 percent are for specific stores that have only 1 or 2 stores in the U.S. It is just getting tireing!

Can I just plug this into my PC and be fine? The 10TB 7200 might be calling my name.
