Anything WD Red is going to be a confusing mess until all of the old stock is flushed out of retail channels.

WD has numerous variations and revisions [westerndigital.com] of these drives, some of which were renamed and/or discontinued after the RPM drama [arstechnica.com] came to light a few years ago. The pictures on BestBuy's product page show a model of WD80EFAX, which was replaced by WD80EFBX two years ago. The WD80EFBX (256MB) was itself discontinued earlier this year and has since been superseded by the WD80EFZZ, which is the 128MB version you see on Amazon. Assuming BestBuy is actually shipping BX's (I wouldn't be surprised to hear reports of people receiving ZZ's), it means you are likely getting older stock which they are still in the process of offloading, same as the official WD store. A quick check of the manufacturing date on the drive's label should give you an indication.

Depending on your particular usage scenario and preferences, the newer version being sold by the likes of Amazon, BH, and NewEgg may actually be the better choice. That 7200 RPM comes at a cost of higher energy consumption, heat, and noise, which, for some, can be a big deal when you start throwing multiples of them into an array. As odd as it may seem, there's a reason people flipped out when the news broke that Reds were operating at faster than advertised speeds.

Better is subjective, especially when dealing with NAS drives. See above.

It used to be $126.00 and it's on sale for $159.00?

Well ok. Count me in!

They may be out of stock. I ordered two 12s at least an hour ago and I think it said there's only a few left. That was actually why I didn't wait until tomorrow to see if any better deals came round. I'm sure they will now!
I'm just looking for a couple 12 - 16 TB drives around this price, whatever brand. I'm expecting we'll see quite a few deals in the next couple days.

Please stop these multi item advertisements!
You make it look like ther is a 10TB for $99 it is just clickbait and if it contimues Slickdeals will be a place I stop visiting!!! Already 30 of the deals are YMMV where one store in the entire country clearanced out one product and someone puts it up here and another 20 percent are for specific stores that have only 1 or 2 stores in the U.S. It is just getting tireing!
Pssst. I know all the deals. Private message me for more info.

Anyone have thoughts on this drive vs a NAS drive (same red plus - deal was posted on here the other day) for a Plex server that is currently running on a daily use desktop? Hard drive is full and need more space. Computer is running most of the time.

Looks like this is for the EFZZ at 5640RPM/128MB cache, not the EMAZ at 5400rpm/256MB cache (usually what you get from shucking Easystores/Elements/MyBooks, or used to be) or EFBX at 7200rpm/256MB cache (currently on sale for the same price from WD directly). That said I doubt it makes much of a difference--maybe if you already have lots of 256MB cache or 7200rpm drives you'll be using these with in parallel, and even then the difference wouldn't be a matter of orders of magnitude or anything like that--and apparently WD's fulfillment leaves a lot to be desired in terms of packing these drives properly, or so I've heard. Convenience of going with Amazon or BH probably puts this one over the top for most people. I also think that the Red Plus series of drives is getting the axe--going to be regular or Pro from here on out--but am not entirely sure about that.

The sad thing is to date we have not seen a deal on a good 8TB drive for $99, not even Easystores. Maybe if you could stack CB deals or something this was achievable but even then feels like a stretch.

If you're interested in the 8GB version, Best Buy has the 7200 RPM / 256MB cache version for the same price:

Nice find! And can pick up if you like so less likely to be damaged in shipping, plus returns through mid-Jan. Don't even need to shuck, get full warranty. Nicely done

At these prices you should get a NAS drive that is better suited for dealing with case vibrations and 24/7 availability. FWIW I have run Plex servers on regular desktop drives and most eventually failed. I suspect the strain came from elsewhere, but the premium here is worth avoidance of headaches. None of my Red or shucked white-labels have died save one, and that one was almost DOA (only a week or two of use before kicking the bucket). Of course that's no guarantee, make sure you back up, etc, but I would only use Archive or non-NAS drives for cold storage.

Still wondering why 8tb is still not at 99 bucks or lower, should have been this price before Covid took over the world.

Is CMR or SMR generally preferred for use in NAS?
You do not want SMR in a NAS.

That said I don't think SMR has shown up in drives >6TB as yet.

Thanks. Is there something wrong with the Best Buy listing? It seems to have higher specs than the same drive at Amazon, unless I'm misreading something. Both are listed as WD Red Plus yet the BB one has double the cache (256MB) and higher RPM (7200) for a lower price.

Thoughts?

The price/TB here is average to other drives aggregated from diskprices.com.
Only the 14 TB at $210 ($15/TB) is good value here.
