Personally I like the Africa expansion. The routes are color coordinated to match the terrain of Africa (e.g. mountain ranges are all black and white routes) which means depending on your tickets you may need a lot of just one or two colors. And in addition to just the normal train car cards you normally draw there are also terrain cards you can draw too. When you play a terrain card of a matching color when claiming a route it will double the points of the route (e.g. a 3-car route worth 4 points becomes 8-points when played with a terrain card). This can lead to some high scoring games which always fun.
I also really like Nordic (stand alone game, not an expansion) since it is only for 2-3 players. Having a slightly smaller map designed for fewer players is nice for those times when you have less people to play with.
I find India to be a little frustrating to play because of how quickly the board gets crowded. It's probably a map I would only recommend for more advanced players. That said, it also comes with Switzerland on the reverse side so you are getting two maps for the price of one. Switzerland is another 2-3 player map like Nordic--although I don't think it's nearly as well balanced as Nordic. Games can get very lopsided based on the luck of the draw.

Looks like Amazon has matched this. But it still has the same limited selection that Target has.

I might have to break those (Africa & India) open for New Years game night.
Had them both for a few years but usually played the PN one if we didn't play the USA one. Usually we would throw in the alien or t-rex to change up play on the USA one.
Was eyeing the Nordic one back when I got a bunch of them, but it wasn't a good price back then.
Thanks for reminding me why I bought them and what to look forward too.

I hear ya, I bought both Japan and France a few years ago and still haven't opened them. Pennsylvania rocks though!
This may all sound daunting, but once you've played them a couple of times, these variations are a brilliant way to help keep the game fresh and compelling with new challenges and strategies.
Our family has really enjoyed these expansions:
France/Old West
Japan/ Italy
Nederland
India/Switzerland
Have fun!
I'm interested in the France map. I read in a review that track building fatigue occurs. I can see this as a possible bore to the game where players get impatient on others or something. Is there a way that you can expedite, in some manner, this process or make it quicker during or before the game starts?
The flip side Old West map also sounds like a good variation.
Debating on adding France or the Nordic map. Have several maps and the add-on character pieces.

Usually there's different rules that are sometimes based on the history of how the region may have been settled or accessed. But also mainly just the geological formation made for different rules to spice up the play. Other ideas have also been added that probably had more to do with just making something different than other map plays.
With so many maps and unique variations; it's best to ask specifically about a particular map and what's different about it from the US map style.
Picked up the Africa game, thank you to the original poster.
