The thermal tolerances on these is pretty poor IMO. Don't plan to use it in any non-conditioned space, putting it in a garage in any temperature above 85F and it will start with random reboots and eventually fail.
There is no cross compatibility with anything else in the AmpliFi line or in the Ubiquiti line. These Aliens only mesh with other Aliens. There is also something called a "mesh kit" that I would avoid, it includes another Alien without an LCD that is firmware locked to only be a mesh node.
I had one issue with one and customer service was super solid, so happy there.
If you are technically minded and want to do advanced stuff, I would really recommend you take a peek at Ubiquti devices. This is a great consumer grade router, but it isn't much more than that.
The same statement above is true for Smart Home folks, Ubiquiti has a solid smart home line but again those devices wont work with the Alien.
The range on these is solid, but its not massive leaps and bounds above other stuff on the market. In my opinion if you are approaching needing any more than 2 of these, it isn't worth the price. My two level, 2200 sqft house needs 2.
These devices do not have a dedicated backhaul, meaning that the communication of the mesh nodes is happening on the same band as connected devices. There is a small performance cost to that, but it hasn't been an issue for me. If wired backhaul is an option that's always recommended.

I really like Ubiquiti's Amplify and Unifi, but I don't know if they are getting rid of these before they push more for the UDRs.

When I used Metronet without paying for the static IP, this was the only solution that allowed me to connect to my home network via VPN.
Very useful when using free public WiFi that may not be very secure

The app (iOS) is smooth (and it works on MacOS which is neat), the screen on the front of the router is cool too... both of which I hardly use but when I need to, it's really nice having it to get a glance of what's going on.
Picture of my router (it's touch screen, there's different screens for testing speed, seeing devices, etc):

My 2 small requests:
1. I wish the screen on the router was bigger and/or they had an AppleTV/iPad App so I can just have a TV/iPad on the wall for a glance of activity or something. I know I'm the minority there though.
2. I wish it supported 10g. I'm on Fiber (1g), and I'd love to upgrade to 10g (you'd be shocked how much bandwidth cameras, gaming, streaming, and a plex server takes).

PROS
-You pay $50-$150 for your internet, but you are wasting money if you are using their default routers. The speed and latency you see is noticeably going to improve with this. Comcast went from 50mbps to 850mbps with a laptop in the most often use room.
-Most folks only had 5 devices connect to their router 5 years ago, now days it can be 10-50! Your laptop, your ipad, your phone, your watch, your lights, your doorbell, your TV, your microwave, your fridge and your toaster ALL want to use up airspace, with old routers that slows it down, with this router-- NO PROBLEM. I have 18 connected right now I just checked.
-If you have a large house with thick walls, this thing will be a savior.
-The app makes admin changes and resets so incredibly easy for folks like my parents who haven't memorized their way around a 192.168.1.1/admin/admin
CONS
-It is not incredible at creating a mesh network. It really needs the ethernet hard-wired backhaul to do that effectively.
I didn't even know it had the VPN tunneling until reading this thread, the more you know!
As other have said, it's no longer cutting edge as it may have a been a couple years ago when it was released, which makes the price tag even harder to swallow. I'm tempted to bite at this price though, if it provides the same stability as my Airport.

If you have no need for any of the advanced features and only care about the raw coverage and speed, amplifi or even any of the other mesh kits are going to perform better and/or are cheaper.
