Picked it up this afternoon. Nice overall, screen manufacturer|device ID is CMN1538 Innolux IPS panel. Backlit keyboard is very nice with two levels of brightness control and off state. Will add 8gb stick, upgrade wifi to Intel 6 and swap drive for 1TB that I bought earlier. Will post pics once I get it opened. converted to Win 11 home with no issues. came with F21 latest bios installed.

Thanks appreciate it. However I successfully upgraded wireless card to Intel AX210NGW. Added 8GB memory and upgraded drive to 500GB NVME drive that I had around. The first picture is as configured from factory. The other two are after upgrades installed.

This is the "better" 4 core i3, if that matters to anyone.

Anyone know if this has USB C charging and PD?
I'm wondering the same. I see it has 1 USB C port, but not sure if it works for charging the laptop. If so, that would be awesome at this price point!

I am not giving this laptop a thumbs up or thumbs down. I think a 12 series CPU would be more desirable. Memory is memory. It comes with 8GB another 8GB stick is $17 on Newegg. I think the Xe integrated GPU is a better option. There is no point in upgrading the NVME because of cost. Probably better off with a 12 generation i5 and spending a bit more to get that.

I guess I would say a soft pass or a coin flip considering the price.
I appreciate that your position here is overall not a strong negative. My guess is that for the comparable systems that were BF down to $250 might have gotten a better endorsement? (Considering the better value/dollar?)

The 12th generation truly has been a radical improvement, but I would want to qualify any broad statement suggesting to hold out for them considering the product that's actually in the market. The vast majority of discount 12th generation laptops are based upon designs with two i-series cores (and some multiple of Atom-based efficiency cores). These big.little CPUs should be more than powerful enough for most productivity workloads (and arguably more efficient than older designs). However, older four-core i-series CPUs like the i3-1125G4 in this deal are still purchases that I would consider "safe" investments for long-term productivity PC purchases. In fact, I'd suggest that most every four-core i-series design from the 8th generation forward (assuming proper discounting) remains a "safe" purchase for a Windows productivity PC vs. holding out for a 12th generation device.

Good luck!
Jon

Like you, I vote meh on this deal, though incidentally, I disagree that "memory is memory". Generally, the biggest knock on this laptop is that it's not worth the cost of upgrading (now or later).

The paradox for today's laptop shopper is that they typically make a 'specs' decision, but specs don't translate directly to predictable categories of delivered user experiences. Even the most intuitive experience category -- 'gamer' -- requires a shopper to wade through a dizzying array of possible 'specs'.

I look forward to the day that cloud vm/vd, connectivity & security are so robust, common & cheap that the laptop is merely an 'endpoint' device: and all I have to decide (and pay for) in a laptop are the input & output capabilities.

What I meant by memory is memory. If the laptop has two memory slots. You look at what type and speed the memory is on the stick in the laptop. Since it comes with one stick of 8GB sodimm DDR4. You match the speed DDR4-3200mhz and get whatever is cheapest in an 8GB DDR4 (laptop) memory rated @ 3200mhz. You do not need matched pairs of ram sticks in laptops.

The other thing is NVMe drive 256GB is ok. But you really want a laptop that comes with 16GB of ram and a 512GB NVMe drive. You also want something better than very basic ancient Intel integrated graphics. The Xe stuff is based on the new Intel Graphics processing units in their discrete cards. Still integrated graphics but much more robust than the integrated graphics Intel has used in laptop for what seems like decades.

Ordered from Walmart twice and they keep canceling the order. It's a trap...

Can someone link the 8GB memory at Newegg? I noticed there's a few around $17 but don't want to get the wrong one. Does the speed matter as long as it's at least DDR4 2666?

It is more than $34 more...as if someone buys it at Staples they will be getting 2 - 5% off at Staples with whatever credit card they use there. That is why you should not included the redcard discount in your calculations.
If those people use them LOL. That's why my post says $300, not 284. Not everyone gets that discount. I did. Chose not to use my CSP, CFU, CFF, AMEX Gold, or Venture X to build my travel points on this one. $34 is worth more than the points I would have received and it's immediate and worth about 2 cents a point with my Chase Trifecta (most valuable system for Hyatt flips of course!!!!!!!! ALL other systems are just not quite at that level you know LOL)..anyway yeah. nah. Did I mention I didn't mention the discount in my original post. That won't mean I won't mention it later.Applause

I bought 6 of the similar model from last xmas. All 6 still in use - 2 kids, 2 adults, 2 seniors.

i3-1125 is 4 real cores and holds its own brilliantly.
I upgraded all 6 to 16GB RAM (bought 3x 16GB SODIMMs, 3 machines got 2x 8's, 3 machines got 1x 16GB)
I upgraded 2 from 256GB to 1024GB NVMe from TeamGroup, another to 512GB using a random Samsung OEM drive I had laying around.

Thoughts on this:
- amazing that units with this chip are holding at this price a year later. 11th gen is holding the value category strong, as it should.
- these are challenging cases to take apart for upgrades. not for the faint of heart or inexperienced.
- even the slightest misstep in disassembly can result in a ruined rubber bottom or case damage
- the speakers are weak
- the chassis is soft and flexible
- these machines are an absurd value for the money. Hell of a computer for a few bucks. No USB-C charging or video, but its $300.

Why Newegg? Amazon seems to have better options. anyway since you specified Newegg you can get THIS [newegg.com] - Backordered

If you can use Amazon: Option1 [amazon.com]; Option2 [amazon.com]

Option2 is 16GB (2X8GB) matching sticks if you are particular about matching RAM sticks.

Stick to PC3200 CL22 sticks - assuming yours has PC3200 8GB stick in it already.

Thanks, someone mentioned a $17 8GB chip at Newegg that was a good match for the empty slot in this laptop so I was looking for a link

Shipped from China. I did see it, not recommending it. Get the Silicon Power from Amazon and be done with it - IMO
