It's a crappy business model to take away features on a phone and then upcharge people who want them back.
General public: doesn't care. Most average phone users don't even know to put a microsd card in. The number of users that are aware and bother are a lower percentile.
IP68 and weatherproofing: Removing externally added features improves weatherproofing abilities. If/when eSIM is fully adopted, there will be no tray at all.
Overall performance: Moving data and applications to external storage can impact the experience of the device as it is significantly slower than embedded flash storage. People don't know the difference between UFS and Classes of cards, then there's a chance that people will put in a terrible card and then blame samsung for performance issues.
Reputation: Data loss can occur readily, which most customers would again, blame the phone or the manufacturer. So there are risks to reputation. I saw this a lot when I used to work as a CSR back in the original Galaxy 1/droid/etc days.
Alternative product market: Cloud storage is entirely another product and business model that's lucrative and convenient for end users. This benefits both service providers (who are looking at data consumption as a revenue generator) and cloud storage providers. Specific to Samsung, they offer Samsung Cloud.
As a techy end user, yes, I would love to have a microsd card. But if you consider it from the business perspective, then yeah, it makes more sense to remove it.

One of the reasons I am not disappointed with the removal of SD card is because now there is just one thing to backup , the phone - not the phone and sd card. The past few phones that have had sd slots - pretty much the whole galaxy and note lines since they removed removable battery required a cumbersome insertion into the sim tray . Microsd cards also easy to lose when not in the phone. Overall its still a plus to have that feature but Im kind of over it.
