I have a number of these 5TB portable hard drives, they mostly are for people to use for storage, sort of double backup if you have NAS with same stuff on it. The top speed when plugging into a usb3 port is between 90-110mps, which is the same speed as my NAS gives when I exchange stuff on my PC.

The other way I use it is label the 5TB portable with YEAR , for example, I would put 2023 year on hard drive, and over the course of year, copy stuff from the PC or transfer stuff to laptop or share some stuff with others. This way current 2023 stuff is on device, and when 2024 comes out just put a new 5tb on for that year.

Just be VERY Careful to not bump into these drives if the hard drive is in active use, ... because you will corrupt the drive. BE VERY CAREFUL! It is SMR drive which is fine for storage. The thing is if you have laptop, and you take it with you, be VERY Careful, because a bump, or jarring the drive when writing could ruin your day.
Does that matter considering it's a HDD? Saved on cost.
Nope. Hdd soldered on.

Exactly what I needed after getting my fiancé a new laptop, was worried the internal 1TB NVME would fill up with all of her pictures. Got about 600GB family videos and pics. 4K HDR 60fps

Ty, that microb 3.0 port needs to die.

I would rather pay a bit more for a more modern usb c port than a early 2000s port that I never see used on anything than portable hdds...might as well be a proprietary port for them

I mean, it's a spinning hard disk you really want USB-C on this aging drive technology? Go look for a native external NVME drive with USB-A you'll never find one ever on planet earth. There's a reason why they're all on USB-C and that's because of their speed reads and writes.

It's not about the speed, it's about more and more laptops now coming only with USB-C ports. USB-A will be PS/2 pretty soon.

Edit

(one of the review)

Q: Are these drives CMR or SMR?
Asked 1 year ago by JoeyT.

HDD drives are not going anywhere any time soon, and they are still MUCH cheaper than SSDs. Most non-tech savvy people probably don't know the difference between HDD and SSD and don't know which one is faster, and they may have never heard of SSD-based portable drives.

I have a few micro B cables solely because I have data on some old drives, and cannot wait for everything to become USB-C.

That said, WD does provide USB-C drives in their My Passport Ultra line, and other brands like Lacie has been offering USB-C drives for a while.

Ok that is understandable concern - although its a rarity that laptop doesn't have USB-A, and even then most ppl use one of those hubs anyway - are wireless mouse/keyboards now coming with usb-c dongles? All of my laptops, including a yoga have usb-a and usb 4 ports, but not all of my laptops have HDMI.

I'd rather have the savings and not force usb-c for a small portion of ppl, and that portion can buy an adapter on their own.

These portable spinning drives seem to be stuck at 5TB forever and the prices have not dropped like SSD. At some point, SSD will get to these prices and these either die, get cheaper or increase in storage.

They are fine if you are using as another backup to say cloud.
