Ships and Sold by Walmart. Not sure if good deal, but its Apple Watch 7 Black 45mm and has both GPS and Cellular.

For an average sized 5 year old, I'd suspect even the 41mm is big. I also remember losing lunchboxes and bookbags at that age, so consider a series 4 from eBay or, if you must buy new, an Apple Watch SE.
All of those watches are fully capable of messaging, tracking, etc. I cannot fathom the value of a series 7 for a 5 year old unless they just need to check EKG frequently
This $329 matches the price Target had on Christmas. If you're gung-ho on the midnight color, this is amongst the lowest a series 7 with cellular has been (and stock is only going down).

Buying additional one for spouse who's Droid centric bc drs recommend everyone over 60 wear a watch with ECG and heart rate capability.
You can live without it. Don't need to activate it.
Don't need it but also don't buy Cellular if you're not gonna activate it. Unless you want Stainless Steel.
You do get the ability to place an Emergency call even if you don't activate cellular, to me that would be worth the extra $ as a feature upgrade.

Not a bad price. I purchased the 7 from Target back in October for $329 . I figure the 7 is good enough and not far behiond the 8.

I use a kardia device that has 6 leads, way more accurate than the watch but it's a separate device, but really good at what it does.
