I've never played any of Monoprice's acoustics, but this is a pretty crazy price for a solid spruce top. Their Indio electric guitars are fantastic for the price, but acoustics are a different animal. I'd grab one of these in a heartbeat, but I need another guitar like I need a hole in the head. If I were a newbie looking to learn, I'd grab one of these and have a luthier set it up. That way you'll get a great playing guitar from the start, and they'll tell you if there are any issues with the guitar incase you'd need to exchange.
It's not a decade ago, a sub $150 guitar by some brands can have consistently good to excellent action. My sample of 3 Donner $100 guitars all have the action below 6/64. With actually great intonation and no dead notes to speak of. Do the tuners feel great? no. But they are 18:1 and they certainly hold tune for days as long as the strings are fully stretched and stress relieved.

Really the side wood is snobbery, it's not vibrating, and the back is barely involved in sound production. That's the physics. It's like people debating alder vs basswood on an electric guitar body.

Any acoustic guitar that is playable, and sounds good and has good intonation shouldn't be treated like disposable trash. Any guitars glue will fail, solid wood top will crack with that sort of abuse. Even if its a 60 dollars the spruce and mahogany trees still had to be cut down.

And another thing; most people get one of these, needing nothing. Decent setup and playable.
^^ This is someone who actually decided to take in new information. And can give reasonable opinions from experience.

Let's be honest, the guitars are made in the same factories/same labor often times. The quality when it's LOW is because the brand didn't want to pay for more care and time in building, materials and QC.

One thing I'd like to stress is, the better the acoustic guitar sounds, the more it should be treated like a fine instrument, regardless of actual cost.

Better sounding guitars have thinner finishes, solid wood tops and aren't overbuilt. They WILL get damaged at the extreme ends of temp and humidity, especially rapid changes often. In this world of plastic people forget what happens to unfinished wood, it almost doesn't exist in the modern world. Well, the entire inside of the guitar, including the bracing is unfinished bare wood And speaking of bracing, the thinner and less bracing, the more resonant sound. Yet all of that still must to stand up to the weight of a full grown 200lb person for (hopefully) decades with only minor shifting.

Yes and while Leo Fender made (Broad-)Telecasters and Stratocasters (others later etc...) To have an affordable removable neck that were factually made to be easy to make and assemble by any nearly anyone. Including cheap labor to start. Where amazing cost lowering mass production savings and more profitability from it must be balanced with high quality control, to suit the product. Today assembling employee are taking more person pride(respect; not vanity pride) in their work.

And now with acoustics; with Spruce top sound and great value. And I note their ads state smooth frets etc... With returns for any reason and good reviews then why would you doubt that?

We went through a stage of other countries making these guitars. SOME got tagged for passing off crap quality. Many are in the used market. They are not the same. Just pick them up and compare yourself. Since anyone can make a guitar then an unfix-able one can and will still be made. However; today's technology and how-to vids, combined with certain factories trying to change our minds, about low cost guitars, actually makes it more likely to get a better guitar for the price, AT THE LOW END. Believe it or not; for online shipped guitars. In stores YMMV. Usually very pricey and NOT competitive.

If you are a store owner then you going to have to get you spit together and change. A lot. You are not to good to compete.

Ironically; many sellers have the lowest prices *and* that new balance of quality in inexpensive guitars. A win for buyers. Putting what matters most in the mix. And often leaving out the high priced fluff; that does not even matter. Yet, still with good looking guitars to boot. Even premium parted low cost models for not much more.

So yes, again; I see you might assume more problems with a $60 guitar in a run of them. But due to the big picture currently and for you the practicing enthusiast; it is actually the other way around.Applause

I don't know how many times I have heard admitted quietly that most new name brand $500, $1000 and more arrived needing love. So when people do get damaged products you can return for full refund even for any whim. But that does not mean you should not learn and shop drive home total price, before buying anyway. Never buy to review; watch reviews first and if you can somehow get it in your hands locally then do that FIRST. Never use returns to get out if the work.

Where with Monoprice you got their guarantee. Not Beki Lui Chow from ebay or whatever.

Yes the new push to prove they do not send crap does seem to greatly outweigh the assumed idea that a $60 cuts to many corners.

Look; most people posting are trying to justify $400, $500 and many higher cost guitars. Collectors with at least 5 (Sorry). And while that's fine; it's not practicing or playing for money.

Or worse; guitar stores and their sales people with "loving" advice for you about $60 guitars.

So think. Use the ole grey matter people. It does depend in what you are trying to do. And that does not mean modding the thing to death, cost wise. Only sometimes and just for a changed preference from what you should have bought; is it great to do LOW COST mod or two; just for fun *and* value.

In fact; if you need everything then buy upwards to get it, MOST of the time. Do the math. Parts are inexpensive; but boutique ones are expensive. Generally get all the components in the new guitar you buy. Exceptions are a real used deal for less (tough) or only wanting to mod with the very low cost parts. Where like the $60 guitars you have to do the work to find out which low cost parts are great.

As usual; you have recourse to return and do not take high risks with any seller. Or not look into total discounts(Slickdeals). And mainly; not all reviews are fake, you know. While you have to work hard nowadays, to not just find the data you wish to believe [understatement there!]; and avoid the lies and including even the we'll meaning false assumptions, you can ascertain which sellers have the high quality and mostly setup ~$60 guitars and other stuff. As a bad rep will get you if you sell crap and do not back up your quality.

Some things like amps are more complicated. Fender types are less complicated and in the end do basically the same thing!

Ask yourself what is a good guitar, FIRST.

And yes I am proud to be a cheapskate. No apologies (save my grammar LOL). Anytime I don't have bring armed guards so some fool does not walk off with my guitar; because it's expensive is a big win. And I use it more. Play it with abandon. Practice with it more. And won't cry if a drop in on concrete. [Except, I like 'em sexy. LOL] I can just spend another $60! How about you?

Yes it's difficult not to buy 10; and I can afford expensive ones too. But it's not my fault if you have no self control. Just go practice.

Because there's "playing" it and then there's mastering it. Very different. I will either die or master it soon and I'm on my way. FOR BOTH! You for at least one, also. Purpose! Lasting purpose.

And did you miss these are NEW guitars, for less than used ones? That has value and time savings too.

Just watch the price jumps when going up to guitars having everything you want. Not several times more than a great $60, unless you value the wrong things, worry to much about what people think and think resale value will save you. Not on average it will not. Ironically the most possible exception is a the $60 guitars selling new competitively, for more used later.

And I'm not talking about million dollar collectors guitar crap. Fine if you want that gamble.

Oh yeah; another kind of modding would be if you want to make a copy of a famous guitar. $60 guitar and some spray paint labor will get you to the fun and at the LOWEST cost. A little skill and appropriate creativity and you can rival $5000 "official" copies. But don't cheat foolish people doing it please. If you are an artist then that can go along way to making a cool guitar and adding value; if you are that good. Without any other famous or signature modeling. No tacky though; is the trick.

Did anyone get an order notification email? I placed an order several days ago, and the charge shows on my credit card, but I never received an order confirmation email.

There doesn't seem to be any information anywhere about what the back and sides are. Solid spruce is a nice addition in this range, but it's concerning there's no info on the rest of the guitar (other than the neck is okume).
At this price point back/sides are certainly laminate.

Arrived today in perfect condition. Bought for my daughter to learn on. Fantastic value. I am not a pro by any means, but have been playing acoustics for thirty years or so. This guitar sounds great and plays easy. I liked it so much, I ordered another just to have on hand.

No she should only have a clapped out yamaha for 100 that just might have a lifting bridge and high action and no case or means of transport.

Despite what your experience tells you, I know that your cheap guitar can't hold tune and the action is so high a truck could drive through. It's not worth you spending $40 on a setup because they need to do a full fret level and file and a US luthier is going charge you $120-150 to get it in playable condition. LMAO

And the worse thing is that you have no guarantee or company to hold responsible for the sorry state of your guitar which is not fit for purpose, unless the purpose is to throw it in a trunk then watch the solid spruce belly up, warp and crack.

Sarcasm aside, how do you think the nut and saddle look and what's the craftsmanship like there?

Frets are a bit sharp at the edges, will need some rounding. Action is a little high for my taste.

If you need an expensive guitar to enjoy playing, maybe you only like the idea of playing guitar.

So long as it's playable and sounds halfway decent (yes and yes, in this case) then go for it.

I would recommend this over the more expensive monoprice acoustic.
Maybe I just know myself. I love playing guitar, not the idea (whatever that means)

I received mine this week. As someone who's played guitar for many years, I think overall it's an exceptional value. Fit and finish was a lot better than expected. Neck was straight. Tuners were good. Sounds ok.

A few caveats: 1) The strings are heavy gauge, which I think would make it especially uncomfortable for a beginner. First thing I did was change them out for a bit lighter gauge strings which made it more playable for me. 2) The action on mine was a bit high for my comfort level. The nut grooves appear too high, which I understand is not uncommon with new guitars. At some point I'll probably have the nut adjusted/set up to my tastes.

They are probably a light or Medium gauge (0.13) string set, which seem heavy to some, but that's the name on the string package. Medium is kinda standard for those who need a bit of volume on their dreadnought guitar. Nothing wrong with switching to 0.10 or 0.11

The nut on mine is really well crafted for the 5 of the strings, but the B string is cut high, high enough to throw off the intonation as well as the action. After about 1/4 turn clockwise on the truss rod, the lower 4 strings have excellent low action. I will need to get a nut file of some sort to fix the B.

This is still an amazing value, solid top, great intonation, playability. Serviceable case, tuner and strap. They provide a FedEx sticker for any rma so free shipping both ways. Someone called it a lottery ticket but I'm pretty sure Monoprice believes in the product with their 30 return/replace guarantee. Not many lottery tickets let you return them if you're not satisfied.

Because this is a solid top acoustic, there's a strong possibility that it will break because of humidity. When it breaks, it won't be manufacturing issues or materials.
