I used to have a KVM, but now that monitors come with multiple input sources I've switched to just a KM USB switch. But having to rely on the monitor to do the video switching is a pain because they don't have an easy way to do it - no extended button dongle that can be mounted in an easy to reach location.
There is a huge difference between my office and my home monitors and comfort level.
Acer is much more comfortable to view and work with.

1. click the joystick nub on the back of the monitor to activate the menu
2. push the nub to the "Switch" icon on the left side of the menu
3. Click "Switch" icon.
Then, wait for about 5 - 8 seconds while it iterates all the sources and finds the active one.
Apparently there's no shortcut or hotkey to do that as the joystick nub is the only action button that you can utilize and there's no any other button.
It looks like source detection is a setting in the options, but maybe the HDMI handshake is getting in the way.
A $10 active splitter with an HDMI/DP adapter would probably fix this for you.

The standard 24" monitors with a 16:9 ratio aren't ideal anymore for multitasking. It's not unusable. But the width is overkill for apps like Outlook and most web pages. So you're left with web pages with wide boarders, and turning your head a lot.
16:9 used to be great when applications and web pages tended to be even narrower. At that point, snapping a pair of windows worked really well. But now days, half of a 16:9 monitor seems too narrow, but the full things seems excessive.
A 21:9 ultrawide monitor seems to be in a good spot for my needs. Snapping a browser on one half and Outlook or Excel on the other, for example, works great. Both windows seem to have a good balance of height and width. You also need to turn your head a lot less using one ultrawide instead of a pair of 16:9 monitors.
Another popular option is a 32" UHD monitor. On a technical level, this is a better value. But ergonomically, I'm not a fan. A 32" 16:9 monitor is too tall for my taste. I end up scanning my eyes up and down way too much. And if you sit far enough back to make it comfortable, you end up scaling the OS so much that you may not get anymore usable space than a 27" 1440p monitor.
My current setup is I sit centered on a 34" UWQHD with windows snapped on either side. Then, I repurposed my 32" UHD monitor to be rotated vertically and off to the side. The 32" UHD holds MS Teams on the bottom half. On the top I keep things like my calendars always in focus. The UW is where I primarily work, and the UHD acts as a dashboard where I rarely switch the windows around.
