Highly subjective. My recommendation would always be to go try a pair in a B&M store if at all possible. Even though this model has the largest stack height and biggest Cloudtec pockets, this doesn't necessarily translate to the "max cushion" ride that the looks may seem to convey. That's because of the speedboard midsole sitting between the pockets and the helion foam. It kills a lot of the cushioning.

The point of the Cloudtec isn't cushioning anyway. It's (allegedly) energy return. I say allegedly because I've never been able to measure a difference using my watch. The only shoes I've seen a measurable difference in my performance are the Nike Alphafly and Vaporfly which gave me exactly the 2% improvement in efficiency advertised (at an astronomical price). But I'm getting off on a tangent. You asked about comfort.

I haven't tried this exact model, but in my experience On shoes are a pretty universally firm ride (both because of the speedboard that On insists on using in every single one of their products and because Helion foam still doesn't quite match the best foams out there such as Zoomx or DNA loft 3). But this can be a good thing for speedwork/tempo days. Even here, though, I've noticed that the Cloudtec really forces you to run a certain way. It favors heel strikers who roll forward and really use the entire foot with each stroke. FWIW, my favorite On shoe is the Cloudflow. It's their second lightest (I think) non-carbon shoe after their Cloudsurfer/Cloudracer. And mine has a killer blue gradient finish. Not ugly at all.

Maybe give these a try. You can also return them or sell them if you don't like 'em. They seem to hold their value pretty well on ebay and other secondary markets.
Only the fugly ones go on Sale

Why so much hate for On Running shoes on Slickdeals from people who've likely never worn or owned them? This isn't Reddit & you don't get karma for snarky, ill-informed comments.

I owned this exact pair. Buyers beware at least this color develops holes on the inner side of the upper where the foot naturally bends. The white color I had never had this issue.

As someone who walks 6-8 miles 3-4 times a week these are amazing shoes. Expect 300-400 miles on a pair. If I hadn't just bought 2 new pairs I'd jump on this deal.

I have this shoe! For this price this is slick as heck. Great runner. Gives you extra boost as feels like it propels you forward. Wouldn't buy this for casual walking, but if you run a lot this is one of their best models. I run everyday. I change this out for my easy run days for the soft feel.

for $150 to $200 a pair, there are better options. had no idea REI was a seller. my feet and wallet prefer the asics kayanos when they go on sale.

These have too much cushioning for running to me but I like the On Cloudflow and Cloud 5 models for casual wear. I prefer a more natural running shoe, with minimal cushioning, for my every other day 10Ks.

If you're used to wearing something like the Hoka Bondis, don't even try these.. the 'cushioning' Is practically non-existent!

Yup, same with my Reebok zigs. Dirt and everything possible gets stuck in the holes and on the bottom of the soles. Great for the gym or walking anywhere but the city

People have extremely low self esteem and channel it by being insecure about something as inconsequential as how their shoes look. They project these insecurities onto other, and combine it with a superiority complex to make themselves feel better.

Are the shoes ugly? Yes. Should anyone care? No. Shoes should be about function, comfort, and quality. In that order.

I think it's a combination of things.

1. The Cloudtec is pure gimmick. No measurable science behind it whatsoever.
2. They tend to be overpriced for what they are (at MSRP).
3. They tend to be worn by people who value form over function. i.e soccer moms.

I think On is very capable of making a decent shoe, but they suffer from institutional thinking. They are 100% committed to this Cloudtec technology and refuse to change it -- even in situations where it doesn't make sense to use it -- like on a max cushion shoe. If that's what you're looking for, there are better options out there. There's a reason why the Cloudmonster is rarely mentioned in the same sentence as the Nike Invincible, Hoka Bondi 8, Brooks Glycerine 20, Saucony Triumph 19, NB FF More 4, and Asics Nimbus 25. I think of On as good for making fast and light shoes, and for that I'd steer people towards the Cloudsurfer/Cloudracer, Cloudswift and Cloudflow lines as a better introduction to what these shoes can do for you.

I've used On Cloud Monsters exclusively as my long run shoes (up to 18 miles) for about a year now and I genuinely look forward to running in them each time. I bought them at retail ($170).

I'm normally not a need-to-break-in-first kind of person, for the price I pay (or MSRP) I expect the shoe to feel very good immediately. This shoe I gave an exception to - the first run, 12 miles, best description was more firm and responsive. Run #2 I was still skeptical but it felt less firm. Run #3, 15 miles and I loved them.

They are excellent at going up hill, the plate in them seems most effective up hill.

I just recently took delivery of a pair of Fresh Foam More v3 and the NB definitely are softer and more cushioned right off the bat but maybe not as responsive. The NB are my daily trainers for now but I could see them becoming my long run shoe too eventually. I think the Ons are a far more attractive shoe.
