I don't have a pc do be able to do that. Should I skip this deal or is there a way to check the firmware through ps5?
If it makes you feel better, I got the 980 pro w/ heatsink for $144 from this deal

And I checked the firmware, it was already up to date..
$20 more for the Samsung, but you probably won't even notice the speed difference in a PS5
Appreciate it! Settled for 6% cb, but also was able to use some Samsung reward points and CC points to make my out of pocket too good to pass up. Perfect timing as I had to choose my favorite child when buying a new game last night.
Plus a bunch of CB has 10% off Samsung so additional 10% off.

I had the same attitude as you and bought a 980 Pro last summer. If I was better educated, I would have bought a cheaper drive for my use case (gaming). It's not as though games in 3-4 years are going to saturate a PCIe Gen4x4 link. A Gen4x4 link is 8 GB/s. Even after accounting for the protocol overheads, you're still getting way faster transfers than a game is ever going to use. In fact, Microsoft, when designing the XBox Series S/X opted for a Gen4x2 link, even though quick load times are a major selling point of that platform.

Awesome. Any idea about the speed for 990 pro?I'm thinking to order either one.

Appreciate it if you can advise which CB has 10%. I can only find CB for 6% only.
I have no experience with the 990 Pro. Just the 980 Pro. I remember reading that there is a speed cap of the M.2 for the PS5.
Also, for PC gamers, there's not much reason to shell out for this compared to something like the Intel 670p which has been $80 for 2 TB for close to a month. You're not going to see more than a 5% difference in load times going with a higher end drive. Maybe DirectStorage will change that, but initial DirectStorage games don't seem to really take much advantage of SSD speed.
The 990 isn't justifiable vs the 980 for a PS5 application even for the extra $5. They are both overspeced for what one needs in a PS5.
If the 990 were truly cheaper than the 980, then that would be the way to go.
