REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT.. don't me stupid like me especially if you have a sata or some other type of enclosure you could plug this hard drive into and then connect it to your PC to test it rather than stupidly going through the trouble of installing it into my PC the way I did ... I saw that the package it arrived in had been damaged, big tear on one corner, crushed in another corner, bubble wrap flattened in one part but saw no dents on the hard drive and thought I'd give it a try.
The moment I installed my 8 TB version of this into my PC that I ordered and turned the PC on I heard that dreadful continuous clicking and of course my PC refused to boot into BIOS.. PC panicked a bit after I removed the defective drive and said it had gone into some kind of "safety mode" , went in there and changed the BIOS settings back such that the proper hard drive was the one booting again and it was all good. Pretty scary at least for me personally though
Of course if you don't have a sata dock you'll have to do it the hard way install it into your PC and see what happens .. I was surprised to see how much the cost of sata docks has gone up, come Black Friday look for a cheap usb 3.0 version dock I've found even the cheapest off name brands work just fine for me.
Of course I packaged this up very securely with replacement bubble wrap padding that I had hung onto from previous deliveries exactly for this sort of situation , taped the heck out of that box to close it up and let newegg know what happened when I started the return and followed up with a call to a newegg cust.serv. rep who assures me that the moment they get the hard drive back into their warehouse I will get a full refund and estimates 7 business days for UPS to get it back to the warehouse and 3 business days for the refund to be issued to my credit card. Do be careful, try to test/install this as soon as you get it and when and if you have to print out that return label get it to your local UPS store as soon as you can there's a limited window from the time the label is printed out.. plus the sooner you do this the sooner you get your refund.
I should mention that the other hard drive I ordered from newegg which is still on sale the Seagate Exos 8 TB drive is still working quite nicely for me as a desktop hard drive (it is definitely noisy compared to a "traditional" not nas/enterprise desktop drive but not to the point where it's unbearable) in the week or so I've had it installed so UPS delivered that drive with no problems
(unless in the case of the DOA drive I described above newegg warehouse damaged the drive before they even shipped it out ?) .. in my opinion sadly newegg definitely does not use as much padding as they should for the bare drive that they ship so you are taking your chances although I've seen amazon do the same thing sometimes when they ship electronics out (not enough padding to ensure the electronic will survive)
