Absolute drivel, and likely ill-intentioned misinformation. Even the 8GB model is more than enough for lots more than "web browsing and basic office work"; this 16GB is good enough for the large majority of power users.

Great deal! For those of us who prefer to "bring their own storage," the 16GB/256GB would have been better (assuming the price would have been proportionately lower), but at this price it's fine and allows you to use it right away w/o needing to worry about an external storage solution right away.

I'm typing this on my $500 base M2 purchased from Costco last month (currently hooked up to two 27" 1440 displays). I'm a looong time PC user (the last time I touched a mac was in the 90's). The learning curve to MacOS was a bit rough, but I'm slowly getting used to the new OS. It's hard to believe so much power is packed into such a small (and cheap) package.

This thing will stream 4k (2x speed) YouTube without a single stutter. It is silent, despite the active cooling.

I'm almost surely going to pick up a second unit during Costco's sale. I'll probably have one unit permanently tied to my TV (for YouTube, Steam, CloneHero, Chrome, etc). And another in my office. For my office computer, I'm tempted to upgrade to the "Pro" model, but I'm likely deluding myself that I need the extra power relative to the $500 base.

This guy is using the base model MBA to edit video in final cut just fine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53xBuFfz6H8 it's still a beast. Btw I have the M2 Pro Mini + M1 pro it is a little better but not that much better.
I use my 2013 iMac to edit videos doesn't mean it doesn't suck at it.

LOL --- dumb take.

I would go out and say 8GB/256GB is still enough for 90% of the users. Even with the "slow SSD" at 1600MBytes/second, the paging is so fast from memory to disk most of the time I won't notice it. Don't listen to people who say you must upgrade to 16GB. This is the same kind of OS as Windows.

That said. I always get a base model Air whenever it comes out and use it daily for 4-6 months. I do have my Pro 16 but memory is low unless I am running a ton of stuff I do not need (ie: do I really need to run a VM constantly, docker containers? keep photoshop running, lots of Chrome tabs). No.. most of the time I am just focused on 1-2 apps and everything else I am just too lazy to close but even that the memory pressure is low and if the mac does swap to disk, it's because of a memory hog like Telegram that will memory leak 2+GByte of ram and a simple restart will fix it.

I can run thinkorswim and all of the office 365 apps all day on M2 Air 8GB/256GB just fine.
So you can run office apps all day, isn't that what I said? Anything more it bugs.

Why the fuq would you buy 2 of these things?? That's ridiculous as hell to me. Why not switch it up with a good windows pc for variety or if you really absolutely need 2 of these Why not buy the pro model or even better, wait for the next edition which surely is gonna be faster and better
Windows ecosystem sucks. Duh

I guess you don't know what thinkorswim is. Tell me you don't know anything other than Windows and Microsoft without telling me you don't know anything other than Windows and Microsoft. Thanks for playing

Best reason to get this one is if you need HDMI 2.1, 4k at 120Hz. Otherwise the M1 Max is better.
There's a work around to get 4k @ 120hz working on the M1 Max, using certain dongles, FYI

16 GB is enough for most people including programmers.

On another note, while modern MacBooks tend break in 3-4 years, according to the techs at the Apple Store all of the desktops tend to last a long time

wow just 4 years? my antique macs had problems, but many now will say that macs are so superior et al. after switching to windows, i normally expect at least 10 years from any windows pc.

but i do my own repair/upgrades.

Same price as BandH and Payboo gives would 12months interest free. Or free tax
I may go for the m2 pro 16gb 1TB for $1300 or $117 a month interest free.

If you are thinking of switching from Windows, this is the deal to get. Don't let the name or the ridiculously small size fool you: this rig is a monster for doing actual work and has precisely the minimum configuration you want as a power user. If you need extra storage, get external. It has TB4.

Couple that with Costco's 90 day return policy for computers and you have a good long time to return the machine if macOS isn't for you.
Nah. I run VMs and 32 gig pricing is stupid. Will wait for higher models to go on sale. PC still cheaper and better for higher configs

Windows ecosystem is far superior but macos is better for developers because it's based off of Unix and maybe also better for video editors

You don't need 32gb but 8gb is absolutely not "more than enough". I do basic web browsing and office work for the most part and I'm always running out of memory in my M1 with 8gb. That's why I got an M2 with 16gb and so far no issues at all.

agree that Unix is a better type of system to base an OS off of. years ago i started out with the mac and worked in graphics, after words switched over to windows and build my own systems, also repair them.

i have been asking mac people why the popularity of these mini macs, especially when basic components of ram and SSD are not upgradable. don't seem to get much of an answer and may have to just experiment with them myself after years of being away from the mac.

this morning i asked the AI bot at You.com about the mac...

The answer to this question is somewhat subjective and can depend on a variety of factors. However, Macs have traditionally been very popular for graphics, music, and video production due to their strong performance and the availability of software such as Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, and the Adobe Creative Suite. However, Windows-based PCs have also made significant strides in recent years and can also be used effectively for these types of tasks. Ultimately, the choice between a Mac or PC for graphics, music, and video production will depend on a variety of factors including personal preference, budget, and specific software needs.

good enuf answer i suppose.

Their statements only agreed with my comment lol no one could bring up a valid argument that beyond basic office apps this would excel and lets not talk about future proofing

The Studio's a little faster in CPU and GPU (not much, but it's there), has double the RAM, and has a little more expandability. Is that worth $400? Only you can determine that. For most people, the $500 Mac M2 mini is the real deal.
https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-com...ple-m1-max this comparison shows m2pro is faster in both single core and multi core benchmark tests, it does note: Advantages of Apple M1 Max
Supports up to 64 GB LPDDR5-6400 RAM
Around 204.8 GB/s (100%) higher theoretical memory bandwidth, which I imagine would help with graphics /video software such as Adobe Creative Suite?
