Good price. Not a great drive.
Google or look up 980 vs 980 pro to see the major difference in the line.
And then you can check 980 vs competing lines.
let's put it on this way

at this price <$45, which drive is better than 980?
I mean at this price you expect most to be "not a great drive". But yeah this is the "entry level" SSD from Samsung for this line hence it's being priced like all the other sub $50 1TB sticks that seem to be popping out now. If you want the pro it's about $15 more right now, which while yeah is 33% more expensive, it's still just $15 if dram, faster speeds, longevity means much to you... for me... I think I would but then again I still have a 7 year old 850 EVO that only has 44 TB written to it, so about 1/3 through it's advertised life span so maybe it isn't that important.

I think mistake was in thinking the NVMe was running at Mbps rather than MB then carrying that over assuming the same of the enclosure. (GB rather than Gb)

1 gigabit = 1000 megabit
10 gigabit = 10000 megabit

That's some pretty incredible speed on those drives Smilie And now I feel old...

Just did similar, but with 970 evo plus. This will be good use case for that purpose.

Most affordable enclosures (20$) top out at 10 gbps, well below the max speed of this or any other nvme drives (can do 3x). Still, 10 gbps is much better than almost all flash drives you can get.

The usb 4 enclosure can do 40 gbps, but are much bb more expensive.

You should consider getting the Pro version if you have thoughts about using the drive in PC or PS5 later. It's only 15 more and much more future proof.

Do you mind sharing which enclosures you'd recommend?

For enclosures less than $25, 10 gbps enclosure, SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD. It's 18.99 on Amazon, cheaper with a coupon.

It's the lowest temperature (rough testing) of the 3 I used. It's also the hardest to set up, as the heat pad is well sandwiched between the drive and the full metal enclosure.

This is a solid drive at a great price. It is TLC (not QLC) and has the same endurance (600 TBW) as the Pro model. It's not as fast as the Pro (and it does have have DRAM) but for $45 it's hard to beat.
*doesnt have dram
not a super solid drive either, and has been beat by the p41 plus (not to be mistaken by the incredible p41 platinum) which has been $43 for some time now. P41 plus may barely be able to take advantage of pcie gen 4 speeds, but its still a good SM2269XT drive, better than the pablo crap controller which has never been in a good drive, samsung put in the 980.โ€‹

Many of the enclosures use the same RTL9210B chip for USB 3.2 gen2 speeds. The major differences are ease of installation, heat management (which affects sustained speeds), durability, and price.

I went with the UGREEN M.2 NVMe SATA SSD enclosure for installation ease and heat mgmt.

I believe this assertion is incorrect, and the drive is faster than the enclosure, rather than the reverse. The reason being 10 Gbps is gigabits (bits, not bytes).

Nomenclature: the upper case B means Byte. Lower case bit. A Byte is 8 bits.

So 7,000 MB/s would be 8 * 7,000 MB/s = 56,000 megabits / second. Divide by 1,000 you get 56 gbps (gigabits / second). Samsung 980 speed.

The USB 3.2 gen 2 spec is 10 gbps (gigabits per second), or 10 * 1000 = 10,000 mbps, or 1,250 MBps (megaBytes / second). This is the enclosure speed.

So, it's 56gbps of samsung vs 10 gbps of the enclosure (or 7,000 MBs vs 1,250 Mbps). The Samsung drive is capable of being significantly faster than what the enclosure can deliver.

Right?

I think your opinion is in the minority. The P41 Plus is QLC and has a 400TBW lifetime compared to 600TBW for the Samsung. The Samsung may be a bit slower but it's also 10% cheaper. I'd take the Samsung any day, like most people apparently would: 17000 reviews on Amazon (4.8 stars) compared to 100 for the P41 Plus.

How much better than the Intel 670 that is $40 for a laptop? Does the 980 use less power?

1. QLC in itself does not make a drive inferior, its a technology that can still be pushed to achieve good performance while keeping the cost of manufacturing lower. Intel's 670p is a great example of this.
2. Lifespan is a good point, if thats what youre really after, then yeah. Regardless, 400TBW is still enough for the average consumer in a budget drive.
3. The Samsung is not 10% cheaper than a P41 plus. P41 is $43 on newegg and this samsung is $45. Still very close in price, even though P41 plus is cheaper.
4. The vast difference in review amounts on amazon is for a few reasons. Firstly, amazon typically has better deals on the samsungs while newegg typically has better deals on the solidigms (P41 plus manufacturer). Secondly, the 980 has been out for longer than the P41 plus, its just gonna get more reviews doing this. Thirdly, the general consumer base is not on average well informed on the specs of specific drives, and will blindly buy a drive due to brand loyalty, even if it means buying an inferior product. So basically consumers who go the samsung 980 route are buying a slower drive, a less efficient/hotter running drive, and a more expensive drive just for a little bit of extra rated endurance and the name "samsung" written on it.

I ordered this and Amazon sent me a Samsung 850 Evo 2.5 inch SATA SSD, did anyone have the same issue? The box even had an Amazon sticker saying it was a 980 M.2.
