Good price. Not a great drive.
Google or look up 980 vs 980 pro to see the major difference in the line.
And then you can check 980 vs competing lines.
let's put it on this way

at this price <$45, which drive is better than 980?
I mean at this price you expect most to be "not a great drive". But yeah this is the "entry level" SSD from Samsung for this line hence it's being priced like all the other sub $50 1TB sticks that seem to be popping out now. If you want the pro it's about $15 more right now, which while yeah is 33% more expensive, it's still just $15 if dram, faster speeds, longevity means much to you... for me... I think I would but then again I still have a 7 year old 850 EVO that only has 44 TB written to it, so about 1/3 through it's advertised life span so maybe it isn't that important.

Most NVMe drives top out about 7,000 MB/s (Samsung 980 Pro). That's Megabytes, not Gigabytes. 10 Gbps (gigabytes) is much faster than that.
99.99% of the people won't notice the difference even if this drive was half the speed.

So this is inferior to the 989 Evo Plus correct? Less speed?

I want to move Photos from my 15" MBA to a external HD to clear up SSD space.

Should i get this 1tb NVME and pair it with this enclosure ($64.09 total after tax)
https://www.amazon.com/SSK-Alumin...13f5d98829

Or get a Samsung 1tb T7 Shield for $80?

Crazy how discounts for NVMe SSDs have outpaced SATA SSDs even though NVMe's are more efficient.

would get an enclosure for flexibility and cost. The T7 should see some larger price drops soon.

Apologies for the dumb question but do m.2 drives require a heat sink? Or does it depend on use?

Maybe. The 'hotrod' Gen 4 drives may tend to run hot if used hard like with large data transfers. The Gen 3 drives 'tend' to run a bit cooler. There are some in both categories that are designed to be more efficient and run cooler.
Then you have the issue of WHAT are you putting it in, and how well does that device cool itself.Best to check reviews on particular drives you are interested in.

If you have the room, they are only ~$10 and it certainly won't hurt.

I bought 1TB 850 EVO from Amazon and received a 2TB 980 PRO. There is a white label on the box with a bar code and Samsung 980 SSD 1TB written on it.
