Misfires generally clear immediately, if it hasn't gone away typically you're looking at wiring damage, injector problem or physical engine damage. I'd start by checking the wiring harness carefully. When you have a single cylinder misfire it's always good to swap coils rather than replace. If the mis moves its the coil, if the mis doesn't move it's not the coil.
At this price, don't expect it to work on some extended Canbus protocols. For example VW/Audi, and other vehicles that have manufacturer specific extended coding.
I think those readers are more expensive. So while these may work fine for a lot of cars, it would only pull generic codes common in the OBDII protocols. Things like Misfires, sensor signal low, Oxygen sensor errors, something short to ground etc etc. I don't think you can get too far in and modify module settings. On my Ford, you need specific software/hardware to get into the BdyCM, for example.

(Background: built a VW/Audi OBDII opto-isolated reader with my brother from schematics online around 2003, it worked with VAGCOM software that is still popular today)
$12 devices have been clearing basic codes for years.

"It can do essential work like resetting monitors, CEL issues, and clearing codes. It can also read live data, collect vehicle information, freeze data and display code definitions on the screen."

I have a VW jetta that had a cylinder 5 misfire code. i changed all 5 coils, all 5 plugs, even the entire valve cover (there was oil getting into where the plugs were) and the code wont go away. can things like this clear the code out? (i know it will come back if its still a problem)

True, engine/emissions related codes are mandated and will come up on any vehicle, but anything beyond that including ABS/Air bags and the plethora of other codes will require either a big dollar universal scanner, or for most folks there's a make specific solution that is cheaper. Forscan vs something like this is a world of difference for us Ford owners.

No, VW has a proprietary non-OBD2 format. Ancel makes a scanner that reads/resets them, but this isn't it.

Be careful, my FIL is a (retired) mechanic and said he's seen the cheap ones jack up the computers / modify codes requiring repairs.

Anything else to verify ?

A $12 will not clear codes, no. Those are $100+ devices.

I got this a couple years ago just to have, and it's been good. Not great, but good. It doesn't catch all the codes from my experience so YMMV when I tested it against the one you can use for free at Advance Auto

Yes, I have read some advice that you should just drive around with these cheaper units turned on and running it can ruin some of the microprocessors on your car and cost thousands to repair.

received it yesterday, thinking of returning it.
$2 Obd2 bluetooth adapter with torque app seems to be better than this bulky device.

I looked at these the other day but ultimately just got the little dongle that uses Bluetooth to connect to my phone. For my EV I believe this will allow me to remotely check charging status whereas this product will only give me info when I'm in the car. The dongle was under $10 shipped.

Bought this last week at this price. Works with my Mercedes where most OBD readers won't especially those cheap dongle things that are supposed to be able to connect to your phone. It read a code, explained in simple English what was the issue and allowed me to reset the code without issue.

Not being experienced with these things, I was looking for an on switch to play with the unit but it draws power from the car when plugged in.

Ask on Amazon, the seller responds pretty quickly. I asked about my Mercedes and got an answer the next day.
