Misfires generally clear immediately, if it hasn't gone away typically you're looking at wiring damage, injector problem or physical engine damage. I'd start by checking the wiring harness carefully. When you have a single cylinder misfire it's always good to swap coils rather than replace. If the mis moves its the coil, if the mis doesn't move it's not the coil.
At this price, don't expect it to work on some extended Canbus protocols. For example VW/Audi, and other vehicles that have manufacturer specific extended coding.
I think those readers are more expensive. So while these may work fine for a lot of cars, it would only pull generic codes common in the OBDII protocols. Things like Misfires, sensor signal low, Oxygen sensor errors, something short to ground etc etc. I don't think you can get too far in and modify module settings. On my Ford, you need specific software/hardware to get into the BdyCM, for example.

(Background: built a VW/Audi OBDII opto-isolated reader with my brother from schematics online around 2003, it worked with VAGCOM software that is still popular today)
$12 devices have been clearing basic codes for years.

"It can do essential work like resetting monitors, CEL issues, and clearing codes. It can also read live data, collect vehicle information, freeze data and display code definitions on the screen."

Nice tool to have if your state has annual safety inspection/smog test AND if you don't drive your car often. The I/M Readiness function can check if your emissions system is ready for a smog test. It'll at least save you a second trip to the smog station if your car was not driven for a while before the inspection. If the tool tells you some monitors aren't ready, you'd want to warm up the car by driving it on the highway for 20 minutes and another 10 minutes on local streets before heading to the smog station.

Are you saying this will not work on those cars or just not ideally?
no, i'm saying it won't work to the obd2 port potential.

The point of these obd2 readers is that they work on any car. Not sure if I agree. Some cars like BMWs work with specific bluetooth apps, but they use the same general wireless readers.
yea, and that's the reason why it's shit compare to the real deal.

Sorta pointless unless your just wanting something for the hell of it and car doesn't move… but if you drive by any advanced auto etc they will scan you for free.. def good for people in the sticks without auto stores around

You would rather waste your time and wait in line at an auto parts store for $13? You can keep this in your car in case your check engine light comes on during a road trip and the nearest town is 30 minutes away. $13 makes this a no brainer purchase. I already have 3 code readers (1 wifi, 1 BT, 1 cable) and I'm going to purchase the OP device and leave in the car so my wife can easily plug it in and read codes if she is driving either car.

Any parts store will read them. And clear them. ANY OBD2 reader can clear codes. Don't want to bother? Disconnect the battery for a minute. This is VERY basic functionally.

This reader is probably fine but a Bluetooth one is better/works with torque or other apps. And about the same so. Meh. If you like a dedicated device and it actually works it's probably fine.

Any big advantage to one of these over a $6 BT dongle which I've had for almost a decade now, but still seems to work fine? Other than the obvious built-in screen and buttons instead of needing a smartphone + Torque app.

In Texas at least autozone/O'Reilly won't clear them unless you say you fixed the issue and just need the code cleared. It's either illegal or against their policy to just clear codes. Any reader can clear codes but not any reader can clear all codes. Some codes you need a $1k machine to clear. You can disconnect the battery but probably longer than a minute unless you disconnect pos and neg cables and touch the cables together to fully discharge the car of any current.

These are also great if you're buying a used car to check the im readiness to see if anyone has reset the codes to clear a CEL.

Pretty much EVERY code reader can clear OBD2 codes.

No they won't. I went to Autozone and O'reileys in the last week and it's their policy to not clear the code - i.e. they want to sell you an overpriced OBD scanner to do so.

These connect a lot faster than Bluetooth and a much more stable connection.

Bought this in January this year for around $23. This is a good deal. Works great for Lexus 97-03 so far I've been using. Easy to check codes and reset if needed.

What's a good tool that covers even VW/Audi?

Many of the cheapo ones can clear codes, definitely not a new thing.
I have the Tacklife version of this and use it yearly to clear the codes on our '07 Forester and check the readiness indicators before taking the emissions test. Works just fine.
*Of course, the OBD2 Bluetooth dongle and Torque app is also pretty good for that kind of stuff, but sometimes it's nice to have the standalone tester and not wait for syncing, etc.
