If you already have a 2tb drive, save your money and wait for a 4tb.
Yes, you can buy NVME enclosure from amazon(about ~$20) and clone your current disk. After clone you can install the new HD to laptop, and format and put the old 500gb in the enclosure to use as external harddrive

It's like pumping 93 octane in to your car when it's designed for 87 octane. It's a waste of money but you are free to do it if you want.
The PS5, it's like a high-end turbocharged sports car. It needs that Gen 4 drive much like that turbocharged car requires 93 octane gas. The PS5 would reject a Gen 3 drive outright and 87 octane fuel would actually cause damage.
However, most any cars that require higher octane fuel will also have knock sensors and easily retard the timing if lower octane fuel is used, effectively preventing pre-ignition and any possibility of damage. But your reasoning is sound, and an engine for which 93 or 91 octane is specified requires that more knock resistant fuel to perform at its highest possible output level.
I ordered this model when it was first released from amazon about $400 and received a counterfeit product(sold and shipped by amazon). It was pretty stressful, eventually they replaced it, but after this experience I try to avoid amazon if there are other options…
