So you knowingly sold a store a defective electronics item but you think it's them who is the problem?

You guys can just order these through valve Refurbished as of today. No need to deal with GameStop.

Deck is so good. Get the cheap one and update the m2 storage watching one of the many youtube videos. That way you can check the inside for issues while you are there.

Linux desktop is great to do just futz around great apps and I like using Edge there! I have a 128gb SD card setup to boot to windows 11 without a hitch for work. Once you have the bootloader boot to the SD card it keeps on booting to SD until you remove the SD card, or just tell it to stop again in bootloader. So it just decides it is a windows device until you tell it to stop. Windows 11 runs flawlessly now, but I really do prefer the SteamOS. I can't believe how put together it is. So game centric! It is crazy Valve did this.

Just crazy. I can get Forza 5 running in Deck mode no problem at 56-60fps nice and smooth. Just love it. You have to get Forza 5 seasonal cars in a week and when you are on vacation you can still get them after the day is done. Diablo 4 runs smoothly at 40fps high settings. You can usually figure out the right settings to make anything look great on that smaller screen.

I have a 16 core 3070 with 4k and would rather run on deck at 720p all day.

I never buy mobile devices. I have worked in tech for two decades, repairing and supporting everything from laptops to million dollar enterprise server datacenters... The SteamDeck is freaking snazzi. It's a beautifully engineered device for a casual user or a tech enthusiast. I can't comment on durability or long term failure rates, I've only had one for 6 months or so, but these are definitely worth the cost if you already have a decent steam library.
Whoever down voted you probably only read the first sentence of you comment. Durability seems to be pretty good with the Steam Decks. It doesn't hurt that they partnered with ifixit to make replacement parts available. Really the only parts on the Steam Deck that are prone to failure are the analog sticks (all potentiometer based analog sticks have a short life), but those can be easily replaced with the hall-effect sensor sticks from Gulikit that will last longer than the device itself.

Not even close. The valve designer said it will be a couple years...

Original News:
Steam Deck 2 release date speculation

Our best estimate on the Steam Deck 2 release date is 2025, as Valve designer Lawrence Yang recently said "a true next-gen Deck with a significant bump in horsepower wouldn't be for a few years." That said, we may see a refresh of the original Steam Deck featuring improved battery life and a better display in the interim.

If they misrepresented the hardware then they would be PART of the problem. GameStop as the refurbisher is ultimately responsible for everything they sell. I'm not going to ask GameStop for the name and address of the kid who sold the broken PS5 to them. I am going to expect GS to give me a working system or my money back. Not my problem if they didn't vet the purchase properly on the back end. But yes, I'd agree selling known damaged hardware is a $hity thing to do.

Heck, someone could unknowingly sell something that did not work but the next buyer trusts GameStop to do their due diligence regardless of intent. Good intent isn't going to make the broken console work any better.

I did once sell a red ring of death Xbox 360 to Target on one of their old trade in programs though. The terms very clearly said "has to power on and come with AC adapter" (I don't believe it even mentioned a controller) I even warned the employee who called their manager which double checked the verbiage behind me and agreed with my assessment of the terms.
I disagree, if someone knowingly passes off bad hardware that they know is going to get resold to an unsuspecting person, they are the WHOLE problem. Not every item GS takes in is "refurbished" (if any back then), lots are sold as preowned. There is only so much testing they can reasonably do. That's cowardly and dishonest.

The 'Pro Price' is decent and probably worth the risk. Hell, you might end up with almost new unit.

But I'd be a little hesitant about GameStop's "refurbishing" of a device that most of their staff has never seen before. Their refurb process on standard consoles is purportedly powering it on and making sure it comes with all the cables. I cannot imagine them handling a literal computer any more thoroughly than that. Luckily the Steam Deck's have not been notorious for certain failures (like the Switch) so there is less cause for concern with specific issues. Also Valve is a LOT easier to work with as opposed to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. They even have OEM replacement parts for sale AND have videos showing you how to replace them.

But if you can wait...might be better to buy a new Deck the next time Valve has a big sale (which seems to happen 3-4 times per year).
Yeah I have to agree with this getting off the steam topic I bought a used ps5 and regret it over priced and also the condition wasn't up to par either so imagine a steam deck GameStop needs to better themselves imho if not then business will fall

Most of my games are on Epic store. Is it still worth it to get Steam Deck?
I know you can install Epic onto Steam Deck, just not sure about the user experience.

Shady as HECK! You are knowingly returning a broken device for credit as a healthy device, and letting Gamestop foot the bill. I don't care how you spin it as Gamestop being the evil empire, or what have you, but it's not the ethical thing to do.
I don't think people care about the ethical thing to do. I'm friends with so many people who when there's an issue with a product they buy the exact product and return it. I'm talking like almost literally everyone in my friend group. Trading in broken everything to places like GameStop, GuitarCenter/Sam Ash, Bestbuy, and even CarMax. As long as someone is willing to take the blow (big companies ) people will continue to do this and profit. I'm just speaking from what I've seen. Amazon is obviously the easies to do this and this is where most of my friends and their wives do this. I feel it's extremely common. Most people don't get paid enough in return centers to give a shit and thus it'll always be a problem. I've gotta say they're always open to me about it and are almost proud. Either way, buy new or at a trusted source.

So GameStop, who claims to be "refurbishing" the system is not to blame at all? LOL, you pay GS for a certified working system not Joe Blow. If Joe lies to GameStop (that is shitty) but it is between him and GS, not me. If I wanted to buy a questionable condition system from a rando in then I would go the craigslist route to save 30-40%.

Reasonable would be making sure it works..that is what you pay for. If Joe Blow is the "whole problem" then it sounds like you don't expect GS to do anything other than make sure the cords are there.

And while I am NOT excusing selling misrepresented condition system, GameStop most certainly has it in their fat fat fat profit margin to account and anticipate for expected warranties and duds. Not like they are only making 5%. No excuse to steal from GameStop but they are not new to the used system market either. They will have built in a 'buffer' to account for stuff exactly like this.

Never said otherwise. But GameStop blaming Joe Blow for the system they sold me is even worse. Again, if I wanted to make friends with Joe I would met him via craigslist.org. Probably less likely to get robbed there as well Wink

This thing is absolute garbage. Almost no games I own on steam work for it and the ones that do are clunky.
So many games, even latest AAA titles, work on the Steam Deck. If you're playing multiplayer games you might be out of luck but there are countless games here.

So the Steam Deck 'landing page' on Gamestop's website essentially just pulls up a Google Map of the stores? How are we supposed to know if the store has it? I dont want to go all the way down there if theres no stock.... and I've called 30 times today, and I guess they dont answer the phone. :-/
