This. No one should be considering this S5 when the 98R754 with FALD is clearing for $4000. The more interesting inquiry for a purchaser is choosing between the QM8 ($10k) vs the R754 given the steep price difference. I doubt outside a light controlled room, most would find the QM8 significantly better. And, in a light controlled room, not sufficiently better to justify the current price difference.

I have the 98R754 (FALD), a 77" LG G1 OLED, a Sony 85" x900f (FALD) and a 2015 Vizio 80" M-Series (early implimentation of FALD w/ very few zones and a poor implimentation so it's a fair reference point for non-FALD vs current FALD bc it was often used with FALD turned off). You simply do not want a non-FALD tv at 98", especially when it's a relatively small price difference.

The R754 is a solid tv. It's much better than I expected. I havn't done a side by side with the Sony but the image quality is fairly similar. The x900f is still well regarded despite it being a 2020 model. No, it's not an OLED, but the R754 black levels/contrast are of sufficiently high quality that only those with an interest in display tech would choose the 77" or even 83" oled over the 98" R754 all things considered (& assuming the extra size can be utilized).

I considered the QM8 (you can import the Chinese version for about $7500 delivered), but its newer tech clearly has some growing pains at the moment so I passed given the large price difference and hopeful resolution of those issues in a year or so that may then justify an upgrade.

At bottom, if you buy the S5, you'll regret it after realizing that on a very large tv, the quality of the black levels become even more apparent than with smaller tvs. And, for only $1,000 more, you could have had very nice black levels of the R754.
Sony for a TCL? Ouch…

I've not seen this in stock anywhere yet. 98's have been dropping in price with slowing global demand for panels and plenty of mature fabs online. Very soon there will be multiple mainstream brand models under $5K and it will replace the 85" as the common 'big' living room TV size.

This tv is only edge lit. Buy only if you don't care about contrast.

Doubt it will replace 98". 85 is pushing it with not many willing to go bigger. I wouldn't. These aren't easy to ship, set-up or even move. It's super niche and anything large than 85 will need to be assembled easily in order to get adoption. Similar to micro LED, when their costs lower
I am one of them. I don't know if I can get rid of the 85" because someone can pick up my 75" and load it in the big truck. I don't have the box for the 85" I don't know who would buy and come pick it up!!!!

I am stuck with 85" and put it in another smaller room if I get 98"

Man this forum.

So a couple years ago, when I got this Sony, someone said essentially "why would you trade your Samsung for a Sony? Bad move."

Two years prior to that "why would you get a Samsung when you can just get a TCL with all the same features for cheaper?"

It's full circle, now.

I'll let you know how it goes, looking forward to the massive display and a few extra frames. The owner's manual shows HDMI 1 is 4k 144hz compatible.

I disagree. 65" is a largest a single person can setup but need two to hang safely. Anything bigger definitely needs two strong skilled people to hang. This weighs 120lb, 85" sets weigh 90-100lb. This is 10" wider than a typical 85." I sit 10.5ft from a 120" projector screen, you can sit as close as 9ft to this. All big tv's require freight shipment and delivery.

Here is a man and a clearly strong woman hanging a 98" TCL:

Micro LED is never going to come down in price to the commodity level. Maybe there will be some name brand offerings under $50K by 2030. People waiting for Micro-LED are addicted to Hopium. Here is a team of AV professionals wrestling with the 200lb, $150K 110" Samsung:

2030 is reasonable and only 6 years away. Im not waiting for i but I don't see 98 getting popular. Same reason why 85 is on sale more often than 75 and sometimes cheaper.
