YMMV; Bestbuy has open box versions of the ROG Ally handheld PC at a significant discount. I can't speak for the ROG Ally in particular but I've had good luck with other open box items from Best Buy, and they allow returns within a 15-day period if you're not satisfied:

I just picked one up yesterday and I'm returning it today. Tried setting up Windows and it kept giving me errors and resetting would send it to recovery mode. When I was able to finish setting up windows there was an update from MyAsus that took a bit over an hour and that whole time the fan would not stop whining and it would constantly blow hot air. Open item also didn't include the charger. I was really excited for this but the fan noise and heat just makes the experience as fun as a budget gaming laptop. It's also not as comfortable to hold if you're laying down (especially trying to pick it up during the update).

Not going to debate the merits of Steam Deck vs Legion Go vs ROG Ally - if you want a gaming pc handheld today and it's gotta have Windows, the Ally is the best bet, and getting one for less than $600 is great. However, I remember seeing reports at launch that people were returning units with issues to Best Buy (such as with the sticks), only for BB to turn right around and sell them as "Open-Box." Maybe things have improved at BB since then, maybe people just weren't patient enough to install all the Ally's updates before returning them, and you do have a 15-day return window - just keep in mind that YMMV might REALLY apply to this deal, especially since there are quite a few reported issues with the Ally.
If you buy this, test it thoroughly.
"If you want a gaming pc handheld TODAY" I agree for sure go with the Ally. If you're SMART and can WAIT a month, see what the Legion Go has to offer once it's released in October. If then you decide you'd pick the Ally I say again go for it. Once the Legion Go comes out the Ally prices are going to dip a lot more. You don't even have to compare the hardware which is nearly the same, definitively LLG demand will be higher than the Ally = an even cheaper Ally. Personally I'd be super happy picking up an Ally for $450 in October instead of the LLG.
Do not trust open boxes from Best Buy please I promise you will regret it
Solid advice. I had to go through 2 open boxes before getting to a good one. All of them were marked Open Box - Excellent but one had a battery issue, another was extremely dirty with the OEM info labels peeling off, and the 3rd was missing the charging cable (Mgr pulled one from another open box unit to give to me).
The other thing to keep in mind is that when registering the device with ASUS, they will only warranty it for whatever the remaining period is from the original purchase and registration date (not the standard 1-year) OR 3-months since it's open box.
This gives you a good indication of just how long the open box unit had been sitting waiting to be sold again.
