so what's the consensus on the airs now? I've seen so many issues with the display cables being damaged from normal use which causes the display to stop working. and now that they've been out for a while, it's becoming more apparent since it is "time" that was needed to see this issue. does anyone know if apple did anything in the m2 airs to prevent this? ppl say that the airs will last 5-6 years... well not if the display ribbon cable isn't properly protected and fails due to damage from normal usage. i'm sure an apple consumer will just be like "pay for the apple care" but then it's like... ??? i'm buying a product that is defective and apple care is basically required now? it's crazy how many ppl say apple products are quality products but then they always say you better get apple care tho... if it was quality.. u wouldn't need apple care

Just commenting on this my M1 Air with a shot screen. I closed it at my desk and woke up with a large black bar through my screen. Quoted $600-$800 to fix it. I can either try a cheap $200 eBay panel repair with the risk of breaking it or just suck it up and buy an M2. Either way, was pretty upset to have one of the most essential parts of this machine give up on me after two years. Hoping to hear something else about display fixes otherwise I'm going to have to suck it up and spend extra on AppleCare

My 16gb/256gb M1 is still going strong years later. From what I've read the M2 has problem and the upgrade from the m1 isn't worth the price…if I had none id look for a M1 deal over an M2 or go for the pro
M2 is much better than the m1. You won't notice the speed change in day to day usage. Screen and form factor on the m2 is great

But they solder them on to make a better connection and for reliability. Jeez. Considering how many times I've had to open other junk brands, just to reseat the RAM and CPU, it's incredible what Apple has done for the consumer.
Uh. Cap. Lies. I ran a computer repair shop for 9 years and never once opened a laptop to reseat the cpu or ram. Thousands of computers repaired.

Soldered ram and cpu are due to thickness and speed. Soldered ram CAN run like 1.5x as fast as slotted.

Apple does it for greed, because they can charge $200 upgrade for a $20 ram stick or ssd upgrade.

I own several apple products, not a hater.

an apple hater here. well, more like an apple fanboys hater here. but credit where credit is due. the MacBook Air is the best laptop in its price range. period. not any windows laptop comes close.

for office duties, there are pretty good windows alternatives. as someone mentioned, a second hand Dell Latitude 7300 or 7390 series (13.3" FullHD Touch, Intel 8th gen, 16GB, 256GB NVMe, 10+ hour battery) is a solid buy. you could auction one of this (in pretty good conditions) for less than $200 on eBay (I've done that several times). you buy a new battery (~$30) just in case and you're good to go.

if you want a new laptop, an HP Aero 13 (I've got one) is also a great alternative (13.3" FullHD, Ryzen 5, 6+ hour battery, less than 1kg!!!) for $600 give or take.

but none of them comes close to the staggering 16+ hour battery of my MacBook Air M1. build quality is great. the laptop feels solid (although it feels cold too, I prefer the warmer but more flimsy Aero 13). people say 8GB is not enough in 2023. I was one of them too. and I am for Windows laptops. but the M1 processor (and assume the M2 too) is really efficient managing the RAM. probably with some RAM intensive tasks you will notice the memory deficit. but for normal usage you won't. storage is lame, that is true. but if you have a cloud service you won't need more anyways. and something that is not talked about enough. the audio is impressive. I can't understand how such an small laptop produces that audio quality. also, you can charge the laptop with a 20W phone charger (my Aero 13 needs +45W chargers and doesn't work with some of them).

TLDR, the MacBook Air M1 is a solid buy. sincere advice from an apple hater.

Can you name me some Windows laptops that make flagship devices worth purchasing that not only match Apple's build quality but longevity as well?

Razer, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Samsung

Those are your options.

I have a $3k+ Windows machine given to me by my work.

My wife's M1 16GB Macbook Air runs circles around the Dell XPS and cost $1300 LESS

Love the people that come into Apple deal threads just to crap all over Apple's products

Enjoy using the trash that's out there ill keep loving my iPhone 15 Pro Max, 16" Macbook Pro, my iPad for easy travel movie viewing and document work, my Airpods and Airpods Pro the best wireless earbud sets on the market literally created and dominated a whole new product segment bluetooth ear buds.

But yeh you are right a few people had issues with the display ribbon and Apple is a trash company

So M1 or M2? That is the question. Having a hard time sifting through the comments for a clear winner.

Question: if you have a bad experience with Apple's product and don't trust Apple's product. Why do you want to keep buying Apple?

Lenovo Thinkpad Series, just don't buy them at the msrp price.

95% of users are not using the full potential of any current cpu... so benchmark jerking is not that important as it was 10 years ago.

I was a apple fanboy a decade ago but realize i did not want to be locked into an $$ ecosystem. My "thrash" product can easily view documents and movies as well. My sony buds sounds great too. Thank you.

That being said, i think this is a great deal on the mac air.

Last year's G14 with 6700s gpu, QHD display with 500 nits, 100% dci-p3, 120hz display, 16:10 aspect ratio, ability to upgrade to 24-40gb ram, usb4 (beta bios only) port enabling, more ports, more storage (user upgradeable), and runs pretty cool and quiet doing typical tasks, as small as a 14" MBP M1, light enough to hold with 1 hand, good keyboard and very good trackpad. This was going for $999.99 at one point. I would say this one would have been a pretty good alternative to M1/M2 Air. The new model with 4060 is still not near this price, but eventually will be.

seems like m1 has faster speeds
m2 has magsafe, so if you accidentally trip on the wire while it's charging, it won't bring down the whole laptop

I personally got an m2. someone else in another thread pointed out that it will have a few more years of updates.

I've had the M1 for over 2 years, and bought M2 for HS kid last year. Both are very similar except for the small design and cable updates with M2. You can't go wrong with either, if you need one right away, go for the one that meets your budget or M2 if you're not bothered by couple hundred difference. If you don't need one right away, i would suggest waiting for the M3 to release some time next year.

I bought the M1 on a similar Best Buy deal (open box, excellent condition for around $750) a few years ago.

Without question, it is the BEST laptop I have ever used when it comes to the whole package: fast, light, astounding battery life, durable, stylish.

I would imagine the M2 would even better. Seriously, Laptops used to have major compromises in some aspect (weight, speed, screen, etc) but this one was a home run for Apple. Rivals the original iBooks, which changed the whole industry when they came out.

I don't get what the Macbook or M chip hype is about. I've been using a Dell Latitude with an intel 8 series cpu for work in the past 3 years. Recently my work issued me a Macbook with M2 16GB. I don't see any performance different when using productive suite, email and web browser. In fact, I feel that MS Office is faster in an old PC then in current Mac.
You have to be a member to understand. It will only cost ten percent of your income but basking in the love of the all knowing apple is worth it

I have a 2013 airbook in good shape. Should i trade it in for new one (if it is worth anything )
I have a mid 2017 Macbook Air and am wondering the same thing. Is there any trade-in value for this? I am in the market for a new Macbook Air as the battery on my current laptop is deteriorating, with only about 15 minutes battery life left after each recharge.

What utter nonsense.
M1/M2 parts have DRM for custom NAND chip, LCD, T2, and other ports as "extra security" & "anti-theft" measures. No BIOs chip.

The 16gb/512gb are going to last much longer than 8gb/256gb models, its pure facts. Even Apple supports this statement in their TBW specs and tech support.

Just getting an opinion for your everyday user …

I am using a 2017 MacBook Pro. And I'm starting to see signs of slowing down but not totally unusable. iMessage does takes a few minutes to update every time I open it. Software updates will start to fade out. Would you upgrade to the M2 now or wait for the 2024 MBA at this point?

Perhaps if I do a factory reset I can get some more life out of it? Thoughts?
