I can't tell you which of those options is better. Each has it's perks.

But if you want to use the drive in-house/on-prem similar to Dropbox/Google Drive app, you can install Syncthing on each system and configure what folders you want backed up. It will back up changes to the other system over the network - and even do file versioning. Great app, and free to use. No reoccurring cost and no remote (cloud) storage required.

Same! I was just checking the prices before I went to sleep and was dismayed to see that they were as high as ever. It looks like these haven't been this price for nearly a year. I bought one in July when they were $299.
