about $14/TB

CCC indicates only once this price back in march
I can't tell you which of those options is better. Each has it's perks.

But if you want to use the drive in-house/on-prem similar to Dropbox/Google Drive app, you can install Syncthing on each system and configure what folders you want backed up. It will back up changes to the other system over the network - and even do file versioning. Great app, and free to use. No reoccurring cost and no remote (cloud) storage required.

If so then it would be safe to say the drive itself is a premium hard drive, quite reliable and built to withstand many hours of use, not a bottom-tier drive. Not really worried about hours of use in my application. Good to be aware of though.

Hard to say really...it could also be a refurbished entry-level consumer drive. Just open the enclosure and see what you got.

If you have one of those targeted Amex deals you can save more. Mine was 15% off up to $15. So got the drive for $265 + tax.

Thanks for the reminder with the 20 tb drive. I checked and I had 40% for $60 off!

The one I bought from this deal and in July are WD200EDGZ.

Edit: I can't speak to the noise other than to say it seems similar to the WD drives I've shucked in the past. My NAS is always doing something, so the drives are always kind of crunching when I walk by. I keep mine in an unfinished space, so it doesn't bother me but it probably would be annoying if it was in a quiet room.

I received WD200EDGZ drives in July and, now, October.

Edit: Sorry for the duplicate response. Didn't realize I was responding to you twice.

Amazon delivered my drive without any additional packing (just the manufacturer's box).
Anyone else in the same boat?

We received a small cosmetics item from Amazon in a cardboard box just the other day, but an expensive hard drive like this, which is not even solid state, being shipped without any additional packing is puzzling and disappointing...
Yes! I've purchased two 8s, two 12s, two 14s, two 18s, and this is my second 20. I was kind of surprised to see it in its retail packaging with a shipping label on it. It was only a little scuffed up. I've already installed the drive. So far, so good.

This guy posts the same thing in all the hard drive threads. He thinks he's funny and/or is trying to farm downvotes.

Thanks for the confirmation / feedback. Lucky you!
Interesting, I did not get any shipping option from Amazon.

I considered ordering from WD directly, but then got busy / side tracked while finalizing my decision that day and then by the next morning, WD had already raised the price (while Amazon still had it for $279.99).

Glad yours is fine.

Yes, at least Amazon has a good / easy return policy if it does have any issues.
So long as there is no hidden damage (due to a shock / drop e.g.) that would cause the drive to fail in the future (after the return period and / or warranty are up...

I'll test it tonight.

i will say that after verifying each drive with crystaldiskinfo, they were extremely easy to extract from their even cheaper cases now then before. these newer cheapoer cases didnt even need a tool to pry open at the clips. i just used short finger nails at the back middle on each side.

Good to know. Means it's easier to get them back in for those who are worried about that kind of thing.
