I can't tell you which of those options is better. Each has it's perks.

But if you want to use the drive in-house/on-prem similar to Dropbox/Google Drive app, you can install Syncthing on each system and configure what folders you want backed up. It will back up changes to the other system over the network - and even do file versioning. Great app, and free to use. No reoccurring cost and no remote (cloud) storage required.

Is it better to buy this or an internal hard drive and put it in an enclosure?

This is a good current price for this particular drive, but it was actually cheaper a few months ago. Storage prices have been fluctuating.

I recently bought this drive as an alternative – an 18TB drive with a Seagate inside for $198 seems like a much better deal per TB:

14TB Seagate for $96 was good price... this is not
Dude that was clearly a price mistake only a handful of people were able to get and thus shouldn't be used as a measuring stick!

I would say you got a used drive from a data center (that had its SMART data erased) in that -- so not such a good price really.

True. This will only degrade in performance if and features if they stop updates.
It's a hard drive in a USB box and probably about half the people are yanking it out of the box immediately anyway. The drive doesn't care about mfr "features and/or updates" and neither do the people buying it.
Stop wasting everyone's time with silly comments.

Amazon delivered my drive without any additional packing (just the manufacturer's box).
Anyone else in the same boat?

We received a small cosmetics item from Amazon in a cardboard box just the other day, but an expensive hard drive like this, which is not even solid state, being shipped without any additional packing is puzzling and disappointing...

If so then it would be safe to say the drive itself is a premium hard drive, quite reliable and built to withstand many hours of use, not a bottom-tier drive. Not really worried about hours of use in my application. Good to be aware of though.

Hard to say really...it could also be a refurbished entry-level consumer drive. Just open the enclosure and see what you got.

If you have one of those targeted Amex deals you can save more. Mine was 15% off up to $15. So got the drive for $265 + tax.
Thanks for the reminder with the 20 tb drive. I checked and I had 40% for $60 off!
