I suspect because 18 TB had been $200 and no one can unsee that.

these newer enclosures open even more easily now. just put in lap and dig fingernails into both back opposite sides and firmly pull apart.

While a raid mirror is better than nothing, it is not a backup strategy. It only protects against a single drive failure. Things like lightning strikes, ransomware, etc, can and do take both drives out of commission and your data with them.

If you care about your data, follow the 3-2-1 backup strategy!

Can you use this as a network drive ? Not sure if it has Ethernet, I want to use it as a Time Machine to backup my Mac and iPhone but then also be able to access the file anywhere … like a synology

Never mind no Ethernet port

So these are shuckable? I remember some recent WD drives that had proprietary controllers.... I was going to get 2 X20's or X22's and put them in a 2 bay RAID 1 array, but these seem like could be decent, albeit at a higher price point (before considering enclosure of course!), and USB3 speed might not be the best, but for long term backup..... hmm....

You need a NAS device like Synology or QNAP. If you aren't that technically able, then you should use an External Hard Drive like this one and plug it into your Mac once a month and do a backup.

You should also use Backblaze.

Always buy these in a pair and set up a raid if shucked else losing a 20 TB data due to hardware fail is going to be not so fun experience.
