I can't tell you which of those options is better. Each has it's perks.

But if you want to use the drive in-house/on-prem similar to Dropbox/Google Drive app, you can install Syncthing on each system and configure what folders you want backed up. It will back up changes to the other system over the network - and even do file versioning. Great app, and free to use. No reoccurring cost and no remote (cloud) storage required.

As an update (given my drive arrived only in the manufacturer's packaging with a shipping label slapped on):

Ran a disk check for errors (Windows built-in version, not the more in depth / DOS-based cmd line
tests).
Also ran Crystaldisinfo on the drive and HWiNFO64 and not seeing anything to indicate any issues.
So I guess I will keep it...

In any case, you never really know anyway since you could get a drive that is well packed, but that was dropped / tossed around before being packed...

I would run something like badblocks, WD Data Lifeguard - Extended test, or smartmontools to touch all the sectors and be thorough with testing the drive. For any new drive I do that and that's pretty standard procedure with the DataHoarder crowd online as well. On a drive this big it will likely take over 24hrs but that's time well spent so that you can say you did your due diligence before putting "production" data on there.

I use the WD Data Lifeguard tool and run the extended test. I don't know if that's worse than badblocks or something like unRaid's preclear option but it's certainly easier on a Windows machine vs spinning up a VM or whatever. I've been using it for probably over a decade now to do initial drive "proving".

I think Data Lifeguard will work on any drive, as it just runs common tests like SMART and the full read/write.
I'm not sure if it has all the features of something like WD Drive Utilities, but I've definitely used the failure codes it generates for damaged WD drives in the past to help with an RMA, so maybe it can act as a full replacement.
That's weird about the Elements vs Easystore. The only difference used to be that Easystore was BB only to avoid price matching and the enclosure was slightly different. When shucking them, the drives were almost always the same. Odd that software (especially WD's own) wouldn't read Elements drives, doubly so because those are the more common. But everything computer-related is bizarre.
