I got the ax1800 in 2021, which is also the year it got its last firmware update. I've never had a router that doesn't get some sort of semi regular security update and promised features like being able to pick which device went to which satellite have never materialised.
Yeah they are pretty reliable plug and forget devices as long as you don't want to do anything more than basic. It's just in today's less than secure cyber world it's weird to me that it hasn't had a single update in years.

You will also tear your hair out in frustration when it decides to assign a device to a satellite halfway across the house when it's sitting right next to a closer satellite.
Heads up on that PCIe Wi-Fi 6 card!! I bought the AX3000 in April 2021 because I moved into a new house and in twenty+ years I've never had to use Wi-Fi on my main desktop PC! I was gonna run cable but the AX3000 was always a perfect 866/866 Wi-Fi 5 connection to my Google Nest mesh.

Well, I bought the Nest Wi-Fi Pro with an offer they gave me in December 2022, so a few months ago I thought I'd upgrade and get the newer PCI-e card from TP-Link!

The AXE5400 is CRAZY, I generally have the full down\up speedtest of 700-900mbps (AT&T Fiber), and Windows shows my connection speed to the router is usually between 1200/1200 and 2000/2000.

Also, I double checked, and it's also on sale with a bigger discount than the AX3000 that OP linked to!

Last: it does include Bluetooth 5.3 on mine (it says my AXE5400 is "v2" or "2.6", I forgot, but I just looked at the TP-Link product page and they have up to a v3 for the hardware on it.

There was even a note somewhere that it IS 5.3 Bluetooth even though the box that it came in was still showing 5.2 printed on it. I confirmed it does work with 5.3.

However these get universal praise in reviews. I am still on the older Google mesh system and need an upgrade. This is tempting.

I am in the same boat! My Google Wifi system has been constantly dropping it's wifi for 3-10 seconds, which means death in most games. I have 5 APs, though, since I have an old 2 story, brick house.

I just can't wrap my head around the differences of these TP-Link mesh systems, other than minor details and the cost!

Seems odd. My Deco M5 still have an update every few months.

Somehow I just don't trust this brand. They sell your data vs Netgear

I just double checked the Deco website and there are now 9 separate versions of the ax1800. From V1 to V4.6. Perhaps I'm just unlucky to have one of the earliest builds that no longer gets updated but who knows how new the stock is they are selling at a discount.

I purchased the ax3000 (x55) during the July Prime day. It was $229 regularly and dropped to $179. I'm not sure how great a deal that model is at $239. Maybe inflation?

Tp Link Mesh system is awesome. I have a Netgear CM1100 3.1 pair with Deco 60 and have not had any issue in the last 2 years. Their connection speed is very consistent and does cover around 7000 square feet.

I have a 1200sqft ranch with a finished basement and a detached 900sqft in-law apartment/garage in the back yard about 40 ft from the the main house.

I have many smart-home appliances and lighting that are run by home assistant but has largely been neglected and fallen into disrepair until I find replacement hardware (pi 3 didn't cut it).

I'm reading that these decos cannot be manually split by 2.4/5/6 bands which is a big problem for smart-home stuff as it's mostly 2.4.

Wondering if it makes sense to just use my current device as a dedicated IOT router for 2.4 and separate them anyways.

Also reading that some routers have custom management and parental monitoring and others require a subscription and others not at all.

Also of note that my area only has service for 1Gb service until late next year so I'm not exactly on the cutting edge of speed here.

So I guess what I'm looking for is a mesh system that can cover the ranch, basement, backyard and garage that can be tinkered with and doesn't require a subscription. OpenVPN or similar compatibility would be a nice bonus as well. Seamless 2.4 IOT compatibility would be ideal as well.

Fairly overwhelmed at mesh options out there.

Yeah I was just about to point that out, TP-Link refreshes the hardware versions a lot, so if you were on the OG its why you have not got one in awhile. In most cases good or bad if it works it works, as for network security that is now done primarily through self updating software no longer firmware, so you dont see as many updates. The firmware is usually to address a hardware upgrade or add additional features to the product itself.

I've got the Deco XE75 Pro 3-Pack running in 4,200sqft, 3 floors. This setup also covers my yard up to about 200-300ft away (intentionally, large property, no neighbors). They are definitely weak on power user settings, but it's been improving. They've recently addressed some of the more annoying smart home concerns for the better.

For starters you can set up a dedicated IoT network that will just ne 2.4Ghz if you want. I haven't taken the time to do this yet because I'd already managed to get everything up and running as things stand, but its a nice option to have now. (Previously, I'd have to switch the network over to just 2.4Ghz for pairing finicky devices then switch back to @2.4 & 5Ghz).

6Ghz is wireless backhaul by default, but you can also choose to set this up for devices as well. I've jumped back and forth with this, but atm I feel like I get better gigabit wifi speeds by leaving it as backhaul only. Could be imagining it though, too many variables to be sure.

As of a few weeks ago, I'm now also able to select which Deco a given smart device can connect to. You can force a device to only connect to one Deco or roam freely (for what it believes is the best connection) or blacklist certain devices from connecting to particular Decos. A vast improvement over the complete lack of control previously.

I'd been fairly happy with the system at first, but as of the past few updates, I now think its a rock solid choice. No more substantial complaints.

Me three. I went with the two-pack Eero Pro 6 for $180 a couple weeks ago (and still available today).

I'm tempted to get the comparable tri-band system in this deal and compare. But I think I'll pass because even though I'm turned off by Eero locking many features behind $10 per month service (which I don't plan to subscribe to), the two Eeros I have are working great right now.
