from the reviews (and experience with DS220j), this won't be the best with plex transcoding. For direct play, this is fine - but if you are transcoding and stuff - look for ones with better processors and more ram like + series.

You can pair this with a shield pro or a NUC and get a full-blown home plex server plus other stuff you may want your NAS to do but this isn't the very good at (like virtualization station, vpn, etc.). I personally use Shield pro for plex and n100 mini pc for other stuff, and that work as intended. This is good at what it does especially at its price point - being a NAS/File server.

Audio uses little to no processing power... and yeah, syncing files, etc. is also low resource. You should be good.

Urgh, would have jumped if the memory was not soldered and upgradeable! This would have made a nice little secondary NAS to my DS1821+. Ah well, didn't "need" it anyway I suppose.

Without hardware PCIe SATA, these are apples and oranges. A Pi is a much more DIY approach in all regards, versus a device with software tailored to doing this specific task already, and doing it very well and very stably. While I'm sure there's plenty of Pi users who claim no issues, there is definitely more work involved, and there's a greater potential for issues. Ultimately, when you're serving files, you really don't need performance if the throughput from disk to LAN is the same between the two

Since my main usage will be surveillance recording and plex. Therefore, nothing critical.

I use the 8 bay for media storage. I just dump memory cards from .y various cameras on it. Now, I do use it as my router and more services. The 2 bay unit I use as my personal storage and computer backup u it. I started with a couple 2 bay units. I have owned 3 2 bay readynas and 2 Synology 2 bay units. The 8 bay is a lot to deal with and far as drives.. but you can always run less. I have it full. The 2 bay is simply simple to use. There is protection, but it's easy to restore if a drive fail. I will continue the setup as is for now.

Buy the biggest WD Reds you can afford as they are designed for NAS purposes. I've run a 212j with WD Greens (had them laying around) for non-critical Flac files but you really shouldn't do that. They have a sleep mode which are not ideal for this application.

A pi is a project, this (mostly) isn't. Computational power is unlikely to make or break most NAS use cases in 2023. Well-built hardware and well-integrated software is going to be way, way more helpful than a quick CPU. I'm not saying you couldn't make a great NAS with a Pi, just that it would be a lot more work, almost certainly cost at least this much (for a comparable-quality case, likely more), and won't have the software polish you get with Synology. I use pis (and old laptops running Linux) for plenty of odd jobs, but I appreciate not having to think so hard about my NAS.

There is a sleep mode in the Synology itself. It really depends on how much work your giving your NAS. Ever since I moved VPN services off, the hard drives sleep for 6 hours a day.

I've been watching the price of Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS224+ ($300 now) to replace my Lenovo EMC x2 . The Lenovo is too slow (maybe it is my network problem?) What do I lose if I go with this?

also in the market for 2 10TB HDDs to replace the two 3TB HDDs in the Lenovo.
