Asus has terrible quality control. I have returned 2 of these so far, purchased brand new. Left stick went bad after about a week, the 2nd one had a bad track pad. Oh.. and microSD card also got fried, which Asus really doesn't have a fix for.

"Track Pad"? There isn't one on the Ally. Try again.

Lower the TDP then.

I don't get why some like to completely lie and make up imaginary stories to try to turn others away from a product. It's sleazy and awful. Even I know it doesn't have a track pad.

I might have bought one if it didn't come with that bloaty Windows OS. The advantage of better specs is severely hampered by having Windows running on it, taking up so much precious ram and cpu cycles. I love that all these handheld PCs are coming out and as soon as SteamOS or any other OS designed for them takes hold, they will all be awesome. Until then, Steam Deck is the best so far.

I'm still leaning towards a steam deck if they drop in price a little, seems like their quality control is a little more favorable?
Love my steam deck...it performs well enough for my uses. I'm not buying brand new releases expecting great performance

Since it's just a bunch of negativity about this device, let me just say, mines been rock solid, no issues day one version. I've modded it now to take a 4tb nvme using one of those transfer boards. Great device even at full price. You just have to know what you're getting into with it being windows and all. SD card still working just fine.
As soon as you introduce competing consoles into the PC space, expect console war like fanboyism.

All of the people suggesting you buy a Lenovo Legion Go for over 50% more money while they have the same exact chipset is not the Slickdeals way. Sure, everyone should be aware of the SD card issue, but it's obvious some people are lying about getting multiple Ally's that broke down on them (like the guy who claimed to have a bad "trackpad").

Like others are saying, I'm just gonna stick with my Steam Deck until we see how well the Lenovo Legion Go does. ASUS lost me after breaking the RGB on my overpriced ROG setup. They still can't be bothered to fix it, almost a year later - just tells everyone to reinstall Windows LOL OK!

I've been enjoying my steam deck since its launch. But if I had to buy today, I would probably opt for the Legion Go.

Even if you set aside the SD card issues the Asus has been having, there are a lot of things going for the Legion Go. The detachable controllers and in-built kickstand and very appealing. Those features make it a good media consumption device, increasing its use beyond just gaming. And when you don't feel like picking up the whole console, the fact that you can just detach the controllers and continue playing is a huge benefit. Plus the fact that it has Hall effect joysticks gives me more confidence about its longevity. I personally don't play first person shooters but the detachable mouse trick is neat.

Much has been said of the VRR display benefit on the Asus, but personally I'm not convinced it's as big a benefit as it seems. On a portable screen I doubt occasional frame drops will be that jarring. Of course, credit goes to Asus for including the feature. But compared to other benefits of the Legion Go, it's not a feature that by itself is worth choosing a console over.

In the end, the relative size of the devices might be the most relevant metric. Some folks will appreciate the larger screen of the Legion Go, while others might find the device too big for convenient portability. For me personally, my use case for this device is purely at home. And being in my mid 40's my eyesight is not what it used to be. I'll probably wait six months or so, for Legion Go to get a price drop or go on a good sale, and then shift from my Steam Deck.

This is a fantastic price for this thing. No, it's not perfect, -basically because it runs Windows- but this is an unbeatable value for a Windows handheld. I have one (had it for a couple of months now) and I've never had any issues with the SD card. That's not to say you won't. I'm just saying that it's been fine for me.

As a Windows handheld, if you go travelling, you don't necessarily need to bring any other device with you except your phone. You can both work and play on this thing (and I do) with no issues. You only need to have access to power and, very preferably, internet.

Don't get me wrong... ally can handle AAA games very well, something like call of duty series. It can play almost all ps3 and xbox360 games too. That's a big thump up for the ally. If you go w/ the ally, you should upgrade the hard drive to 4TB ssd. Yeah... you heard me, there's an alternative way to upgrade to 4TB by using a regular MVMe m.2 ssd and avoiding cooking micro sd cards. Steam deck, on the other hand, has a big issue w/ cod. I tried to play cod 4 (ps3 version), and it crashed every 10 minutes, what a shame. Other than that steam deck can handle almost anything else. Maybe I should get Lenovo Go so I can play cod games, who knows.
There's option to install Windows on steam deck too

This is exactly why I'm on the fence. Seems like It's almost imperative a protection plan is required for the rog ally considering the sd card failure rate complaints.
You can find a credit card that offers an extended warranty to save you on the extra cost.

Usually when you run full power, it's about an hour battery life. However it's you lower the TDP, you can get up to 2 or more depending on the games played. For me, I get about 1.5 hr for BG3 with 18watts TDP.

Where is there a 4TB 2230 SSD?
you don't need 2230 you can buy Rog Ally 90 degree adapter for $10 and use 2280s for half the price
