Is the stand really needed? It's going to be my first planer so I have no idea.
Necessary? No. Nice to have a stand? Absolutely. This thing is heavy and awkward so, unless you have a dedicated place to put it, a stand (either the Dewalt stand or something you build) will make your shop life a lot easier. A mobile stand gives you the ability to move it out of the way when not in use. The drawback to the Dewalt stand is there is a lot of wasted space beneath that could be used for storage.

Thank you. It makes sense.

is $630 a good/the best deal for this with a stand?

$599 was the "good" deal two years ago but it may never get that low again. So based on that $630 is probably pretty good for the planer, tables, blades, stand bundle.
Edit: looks like the $630 deal is dead. It will probably come back around.

Thanks, I purchased it yesterday just in case. SD search showed it was $530 2-3 years ago, so I assumed this should be a pretty good price. I don't think it would go any lower during BF. I think I can PM over chat if it goes lower, thoughts?
I built a mobile base for my DeWalt Planer - left enough space underneath for a dust collection bag and 4" hose, all off Amazon, and ran the hose along the side. Used 2x4's and works better than anything you could buy for this application. Recommend this approach.

was it really $529? I was just looking at the page last night which was not below $600 and it was $599 when I checked it again

Seem to be 1/3 of price or less.
