Got my order for 2 phones delivered today, and got them both activated to start the countdown clock on the unlock. For anyone who bought one just to activate for the one-month plan you purchased and unlock, the easiest way is the automated phone service (the online process wasn't working for me):

1) 1-877-430-2355
2) Press 2 to Activate Device
3) Press 2 for a New Number
4) Follow voice prompt to enter IMEI, ZIP code, create PIN, etc. When asked by the prompt if you want to "add to an existing account", say "No". If you purchased a plan with the phone, it will recognize this and automatically activate the SIM for the plan.

When the voice prompt tells you to power on the device, the instructions were incomplete and unclear. If you've never activated a phone before here are the steps:

1) Attached to the box for your phone is the associated SIM card in a pouch; remove and punch out the nano-SIM.
2) Using the SIM tool in the iPhone box (or a small paperclip), pop out your SIM card tray and insert the nano-SIM.
3) Re-insert the SIM tray into the iPhone and power on the phone.
4) Go through the setup process; I recommend connecting to WiFi when prompted to make things go faster.
5) Your phone should be activated within a few minutes of being powered on with the SIM inserted, assuming you went through all the steps in the automated phone activation.

So no luck at Tega Cay, SC Walmart. They did have at least 2 in stock. The guy was nice looking into it for 30 mins or so. He finally found out the Walmart had to have the WARP system for in-store phone activation so call up or local Walmart to ask if they have that. He mentioned the store in Rock Hill, SC on Dave Wylie had the WARP system.

I'm not going to waste my time going there, but thought I'd help others. Be sure to call the local Walmart you are going to, ask if they have the phone in stock (both stores said online they didn't have stock, but both stores did have them in stock) and ask if they have the WARP system for activation. Good luck everyone.

Yes done it three times now. Use it a few times with the straighttalk network for a few days first though. Text, call, browse then 61 days later unlocked.

Did you get yours from ST or WM? At some point, I think ST was giving new customers an extra 30 days for free or something, although I think that was for orders directly from them.
I got it straight from ST. If I got an extra 30 days I wasn't aware of it. It says my service ended on 12/13.

Yeah, it sounds like you probably got that extra month … you might want to try logging in and look at your account to see when it says it expires. I think there may be a disconnect in the 611611 info since it was some kind of promo thing.

Oh yeah … I'd also look to make sure that you didn't get charged for an extra month in case auto-refill may have been turned on.

When I texted 611611, it said the service end date was 12/13, but I'm still able to call other phones today. Is there some kind of grace period before ST cancels service?
I got an e-mail (at the address I gave Walmart rep during activation) from Straighttalk 6 days after my service ended, basically saying "your account is 6 days past its service end date so your service is now suspended." So, I guess you get a 6 day grace period after the end date.

Finally got my refund from my 11/6 order. Had to raise a complaint with FCC. Still took like 2 weeks post the FCC complaint but they kept calling me every day saying they are working on it.

Not sure how the FCC would help.

If I want to continue service on this phone until it unlocks, safest situation would be staying with Straight Talk rather than a Tracfone plan? And cheapest option would be their $35 phone/data plan or, if the phone can be used with Google Voice, their $25 data-only plan?

Yeah, if you're already activated on ST and want to keep service active, I'd probably stick with ST and not try switching to TF until it unlocks … I haven't seen reports from people trying that switch midway. However, you shouldn't need to keep active service at all if the unlock is the only concern.

All I did was after activating it, send the unlock request mentioned on first page, it said unlock will happen in 2 months. I didn't get a message I also didn't subscribe for a second month. I made sure it was over 61 days. Just did a phone restore from old to new and it asked to activate Esim I said yes and bam it worked
what is the activation date shown on apple's warranty website? thanks

My one month plan ended on 12/8 and a message to 611611 indicated that the phone will be unlocked on 1/8/24. Do I need to have ST sim in the phone and do I need to be in the US for it to unlock?

I am traveling abroad this week and was planning to give it to one of my relatives. Will it unlock on 1/8/24 even if the phone is outside the US ?

Also, on 1/9/24, will it show unlocked status if I just reset the phone ?

Most time you don't need to reset the phone. The lock status will change itself. BTW, if 611611 say your phone will be unlocked on 1/8/24, actually based on my experience, it will unlock at 12am 1/7/24 (new york time) You can just use sickw.com to check if it's unlocked.

I believe the FCC regulates cellular phone companies.

You need to go back to the store and get the PIN number to activated it. I had that happen with two of the phones I bought. "It should come activated right out of the box" is the typical line… make sure you get the 15 digit activation pin printed on a sheet of paper by the mobile tech.
So on my white paper they gave me my pin is only 4 numbers long? I have to go back today. It says account pin and then 4 numbers.

That's a different security PIN on the main printout. You only need the activation PIN if they failed to activate the phones properly in-store. They don't usually print those out unless someone asks for it. Does the phone work? (assuming it was a recent purchase) Does it show a phone number associated with it on the web portal? There's no need to make a trip back unless there's a problem.
