Is AMD really bad? How is the performance comparing to i5-1335u? TIA!
These two models are fairly close in performance but AMD beats Intel,

I bought this for my teen to be his first non-chromebook computer. I know so little about computers, so please forgive me if this is a foolish question, but should I upgrade his RAM? Is 8 GB too little? And if yes, is that a relatively easy thing to do? I haven't modified a computer in many years and I don't want to mess it up!

That's a great question. RAM's pretty easy, just do your best to avoid static discharge. You should be able to find the replacement procedure on YT. I'd immediately upgrade to 16GB, 32 if the prices are decent. RAM is pretty cheap these days, I don't really know why the manufacturers are skimping on it.

It's GTX 2050, which is rumored to be the GPU that Nintendo Switch 2 will use.

Random rabbit trail, the switch is underclocked a lot. See videos about bringing it up to power on YouTube.

I'm guessing this is GTX 1060 performance with 4GB of VRAM and perfunctory ray tracing. You will have a hard time playing any AAA games with this, but if all you need to to is drop in $25 in RAM for an otherwise good PC experience.

This laptop only has 1 M.2 slot!

This feels like one of those Black Friday specials combining a bunch of random overproduced parts.

The GPU is really outdated at current specs, especially since 3050's can be had for $30 more, as posted on other deals.

Its easy to do, and you can find youtube videos on it as mentioned, yes 8GB is a very small amount for todays standards.

Same exact HP Victus with 3050 6 GB was a FP deal with 19 rating before it expired:

Those machines cost a hundred dollars more. Why are you even mentioning them?

Why not? If I wasn't looking at laptops for the last week and didn't previously see all those, I'd spent the extra $100 for a better CPU and non-open box

I don't think this is the case. The performance difference between a 2050 and 4GB 3050 is a few percent. The naming is confusing because apparently the 2050 in these laptops was released after the 3050 and is a cut down version. Source: https://youtu.be/MIimIAMv7sk

With DLSS, this laptop is "totally viable" for running modern /2023 AAA games according to this video (skip to 22 min) https://youtu.be/ySc1e-vIm9Q

The benefit of using a low TDP GPU and CPU is that the machine runs cooler and significantly quieter than most gaming laptops. Some report even cooler temps after repasting

My buddy got this and put in another stick of DDR5 RAM (his was 5600 but ymmv) that he got off eBay for <$25, which brought him to 16GB. For sub $500, I think this deal is hard to beat.

Made a mistake and thought they were both the same price.

Thanks for the heads up - edited post.

It's worth mentioning that at the same price, that exact laptop was a FP deal with a rating of 19 before it expired.
