Just a small warning, last two games I've bought "New" from Gamestop were not new, the cases had been already been opened and there were price stickers directly on the case (no cellophane wrap). If you don't care about that, that's fine, but I feel like it's shady to sell opened products as "new"

I beat tales of arise a few months ago. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but I will say it's not $5 because its sucks or it's shovelware. You see that a lot with Gamestop, where the majority of their Under $5 games are sports titles or junk, but I think Tales of Arise just had a very wide release, so it sits on the shelves.

It's just kind of a perfectly servicable RPG. It's not deep or interesting, but it's not bland. It's not heavy on dialog, if you're not a completionist you can blast through it pretty quickly.

I think what I enjoyed about it most was the combat which is new Final Fantasy style button masher action with character switching and spellcasting on the fly. It's very combo and element oriented. It was "fun", but I left disappointed because I didn't find it very compelling or deep.

Also it has a fishing minigame, 10/10.

That's good to know. This happens a lot there. I wonder why there's been no lawsuits on GameStop because of that. Strange

I've had a few friends who worked at gamestop so I know the whole gutted copy thing they do. I do believe that some of the games they gut they don't play, but likely because the employees aren't interested in playing it or they already have their own legit copy.

In the case of 13 Sentinels though, there was a big ol' fingerprint on the disc despite being sold as "New" which was kind of upsetting, I did complain about that and got my money refunded on that one.

There weren't fingerprints on the Wanted: Dead or Star Ocean: Divine Force copies I ordered, but they were opened and the cases both had several signs of being handled/bumped around and had stickers directly on the case and residue of peeled off stickers. I managed to get the stickers/residue off without damaging the cases but it's kinda annoying that I have to do this on games sold as "New"

if i buy this and put it on my ps5 for the digital upgrade, do i need the disc every time i want to play? or can I play my digital copy without? I'm trying to move away from physical games.

You have to have the physical disc in the PS5 in order to play. Otherwise you could install and just pass the disc around.

Back in the day Gamestop opened all games and in many cases would remove the additional codes that would be free with the game. I refused to do business with them for many years and still rarely buy. They didn't even hide it and there were articles about it.

I think this came out just before Elden Ring, I remember Bandai Namco pushed this hard but did next no marketing for Elden Ring. In retrospect, I guess this needed the marketing, Elden Ring didn't.

You're lucky your store lets you return it. Mine doesn't put a seal on them (like they're supposed to), and then they say you can't return it because it's no longer "new" as when you bought it.

FYI, they are also running a special of $5 off store pickup for online orders of $15+ (or at least they were a couple of days ago) I bought Forespoken for 75% off ($17.50) and added Tales of Arise for free. Both were sealed new copies. I also grabbed Scarlet Nexus off the shelf as it was $5 and they just took the disc from the drawer and put it inside the case and sent me out the door with it. That might have been their last copy though. The only annoyance is a little 75% off sticker on the spine that doesn't seem to want to come off. 3 decent looking PS5 games for around $20 is not bad though.

someone posts that every gamestop post..what they do is for the games that dont get a empty slip cover..one game out of the run is shucked and immediately put in their drawer.. its still new its just doesnt have the shrinkwrap. if you are getting a scratched game being sold as new its likely a shady gamestop employee who swapped it out. the shucked copy is always the last copy of a game sold.
its easy to dump on gamestop..its low hanging fruit...im not the hugest fan either...but considering there are games i cannot play any more because they were only digital only releases or got mired in licensing hell, i want disc games to stay. If (when) gamestop closes it will be the final nail in the physical disc coffin and we will be left to the whims of digital only and whtever is in that EULA noone reads.

I'm not really complaining because I picked it up for $5 but calling an obviously used game new is disingenuous. Yes, they have to have a copy to display on shelves but at least don't pretend it's "new". The term "like new" exists for a reason.

as an aside i bought tales of arise 4 different times...ive forgotten ive bought it 4 times because it stays in the gonna play it one day pile. i just saw some announced dlc for this game too
