There are ways which have been used to successfully unlock AT&T phones without waiting for 60 days.

ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.

1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.

Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.

1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

Btw, this thread has great info on buying an unlocked phone through ATT to avoid paying for service and saving the 100 off Verizon price.

I would just look for a Note 10+ , has MicroSD, no support, but I think there are some out there for $200, I think the 10+ has 12GB of ram, less hertz but better quality image

This is a great deal only if Samsung will offer like $800-$900 trade in at the preorder for s24...I think that range might be for the S23 ultra...

From what I'm gathering, the important part is getting that s22u disassociate from the att plan. Did you try searching the unlock status today using the unlock request # and imei? I would start over honestly. Put the sim back in the unlocked phone again and get the s22u off your account then redo it. The other guy said you can try twice before getting that 24hr lock.

It worked!!

Now I'm trying to cancel but I'm getting billed for the whole first month + activation fee. I'm past the 3 day window for waiving the activation fee so that makes sense. I was told by a rep over chat that they do not prorate.

Any luck on your end? Or if anyone else knows?

I haven't cancelled yet. My 3 day window ends tomorrow so I'm going to cancel tonight and hope I get the android 14 update at some point today.

Free. You can submit a request as soon as the 60 days is done. Even if service has stopped.

You might not need service. When I purchased my last BestBuy AT&T Pay in Full but requires activation phone... the terms said after 60 days of service. Now it says just 60 days from purchase date. So even better... might just need to wait 2 months and spend $0 extra.
so is it like owning an unlocked S22 Ultra in 500 bucks if we can live with 2 months of locked service? I was actually thinking it may have to be paid in full?

It is paid in full. It is your phone 100%. There is no bill credits owed or financing. Before the terms you can get it unlocked immediately, then it changed to "after 60 days paid service", and now it looks like "after 60 days from purchase date".

Earlier this year I barely slid in the first scenario with a Fold3 from BestBuy with same AT&T new line/account discounted price. They changed the policy a few days after I bought it to needing 60 days of paid service.

You do have to cancel the service within like 3 days to get a full refund on activation and any service charge if I believe correctly (Google for your state as it might be different). If you port the number out to another service, it'll auto cancel too.

I wonder if this deal is good enough to open a new acct on AT&T, get 4 new lines, to flip? Is there a limit on number of lines for new account?

but here it does not allow to check-out without activating... so likely requires a service

Yes signup and put in a number you can't port over. Cancel within a few days. Tell customer service you'll activate and port over in person. That's what I did.

So it seems the phone is activated when the purchase is made? If it is out of stock at a local store and has to be shipped to store or shipped to home, it would be out of the 3-day window to cancel to avoid activation fee?

I picked up the 512GB ATT device today.
So far, the device activated. Best buy gave me a separate activation kit for some reason although the phone had a SIM card inside as well. I used the one Best Buy gave me separately.
I noticed that I got an email from ATT the day my device arrived at the store (yesterday) so I'm hoping the "3 day window" will start at yesterday at the latest despite experiences to the contrary here.
I ported from google voice, and the phone number is kind of active on both, but when I make calls from a mobile phone or texts from another mobile phone, the ported number appears to be working fine on AT&T. The port status says my previous carrier approved, but it's still showing in progress.

I put the SIM card in an unlocked phone - it took a long time to update on the myATT site. I logged out, rebooted the unlocked phone a few times, etc - I think it took about 2 hours to show up.

I had forgotten to update the OS. There are a lot of updates - I must have done 10 updates. I used a SIM from a work-issued ATT phone to do the updates. I had assumed it would roll to Android 14, but it didn't.
Maybe associating to another ATT account to the device screwed up the method. I wish I hadn't done that.
When I tried to unlock, I get "The device you want to unlock is active on another AT&T account. The account owner needs to remove the device from their account first."
When I went to plugin name/phone number/email again, I guess I took too long and it told me to start over...then I got the "you tried too many times. wait 24 hours." Welp I guess there's no doubt I'll pass 3 days now.

I wonder why this was so easy for some people. Hopefully the unlock will be smooth in 24 hours. Reading this thread and the other GadgetNerd thread, it looks like I might be on the hook for a month at $60 too. Ouch.

Had the same experience when was similar deal for Fold 3 at BB. Most of people were lucky and so darn easy to unlock it. While I stuck with exactly same situation as you did. Took days and nerves to get it unlocked, but after they made 60 days minimum of service there is no other way either pay for two months and all those fees or be lucky sim swap method works for you.

I bought AT&T deal for 2 phones and canceled them within 3 days. I tried to unlock phones using sim switch as I have existing AT&T account but got the message that I can't unlock the phone as it's cancelled within 14 days.

I tried eBay seller with paid unlock but unfortunately that was rejected with the same reason. I have no clue now, what to do with these phones other than waiting for a trade in deal next year. So be careful…

I bought my s22u from best buy yesterday, phone arrived today, and I'm already unlocked. Monday morning around 9am I bought a tello number with esim, purchased from best buy Monday at 10am using the tello number, phone arrived today while I was at work, got home around 7 and started updating (was hoping to get Android 14 with the at&t sim since it was just released for the s22u for at&t customers this week), spent about 3 hours doing every update. Then I popped the at&t sim into an unlocked phone, made one call, checked the at&t acct &saw my unlocked phone listed, so I went to the unlock request page in an incognito browser, typed in the imei, used a different name and email from my account, and I got the unlock code within minutes. Just need to cancel the service by sometime tomorrow and that's it! Super easy! There is still no billing amount showing up in my account, but for some crazy reason my account got linked to my grandfathers (not sure how, I was on his plan maybe 10 years ago) and he has a crazy balance due. I hope they don't try to loop me into that. Regardless, I am typing this on my new s22u with my visible sim card.

Edit: I think the important part is putting the at&t sim in an unlocked, paid off device. Before you tried the unlock request, did you see the unlocked device showing up in your account? It should have replaced the s22u, and it should say eligible for upgrade or something. Don't put the sim back into the s22u before you get the phone unlocked. And when you submit the unlock request make sure that you click the option "I don't have an at&t phone number" which prompts you to enter in the imei instead. Did you miss any of those?
May I ask, does the updating of the phone mean updating the android system or flashing the phone to get rid of the ATT stuff? Also, does it need to be done before unlocking or can it be done after unlocking? Thanks!

2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ [xdaforums.com] as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
If I need to flash S22+ instead of S22U, should I download and use the same odin software? And do you happen to know what firmware I should use or where I can find firmware for S22+? Thanks!
