AT&T Cancellation policy can be found at https://www.att.com/wireless/return-policy/.
"Service Cancellations within 14 Days. You may call us at 800-331-0500 to cancel wireless service. You are responsible for all applicable fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges, or other charges through the termination date. AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if service is terminated within 3 days of activation. The charges for service used on the account before the service termination date may be applied against any down payment."
There are ways which have been used to successfully unlock AT&T phones without waiting for 60 days.
ATT requires 60 days active before unlocking the phone. However, there is SIM Swap method which worked well in the past for unlocking paid-off ATT phones right away.
1. ATT changed their unlock policy on 3/18 to require 60 days of service before they can unlock a fully paid device. Previously, it used to be right away if you have paid in full.
2. There two timeline for the cancellation. If you cancel a line before 3 days it was active then the activation fee is waived. If you cancel it within 14 days from activation under buyers remorse then no bill is charged but activation fees need to be paid. The line activates on right when you place the order not the day you receive the phone on hand so you might have to pay the activation fee of $35.
3. You can use a tello number and port to ATT but you would have to make sure porting is successful by going to https://www.att.com/portstatus/. Many from z fold 3 got stuck in porting limbo and got the ATT account cancelled.
4. As with many deals here, a SIM swap method is found which can be used to unlock the device. This was working recently but not sure if ATT would fix it by the time you try it. The steps are as follows.
a. Pay in full for the phone. While your payment will quickly reflect in your account it will be at least a few hours before it updates for the unlock request.
b. When you receive the phone activate it on ATT with the SIM provided. Make sure it shows up on myATT app/in the web so ATT knows and registers the IMEI in the network. Then put the SIM in another unlocked phone, reboot, make some calls and make sure this unlocked phone is now showing under the line in app/web portal.
c. Now go to ATT unlock portal https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ and then choose not an ATT customer and use the IMEI of ATT phone and submit an unlock request.DO NOT attempt more than twice or you will be blocked for 24 hours.
d.Confirm the unlock request email and receive the unlock code.
e. Only cancel the line after you have unlocked the phone.
Then after unlocking if you are feeling adventurous and want to flash the phone to an unlocked firmware to get rid of ATT bloat you can follow these steps. It's actually very easy to do with Odin.
1. There are many models of s22 ultra but in US two models are imp. S908U is carrier locked version and S908U1 is the unlocked US version. The firmware for these versions are interchangeable so you can flash the ATT model with S908U1 firmware.
2. Download patched odin v3.14.1_3B_PatchedD.zip from https://xdaforums.com/t/patched-o...1.3762572/ as regular odin does not allow flashing mismatched firmware.
3. Download the firmware from S908U1 XAA version from https://samfrew.com/model/SM-S908U1/region/XAA/ Extract as there will be multiple files.
4. Connect S22U to the windows PC.
5 .Put s22u in download/recovery/odin mode. Power down. Press Volume up and down together and then press Volume up to go into recovery (a green screen would appear).
6. Start odin and then select different files for different categories and then start.
7, It should be now the US unlocked version.

Now I'm trying to cancel but I'm getting billed for the whole first month + activation fee. I'm past the 3 day window for waiving the activation fee so that makes sense. I was told by a rep over chat that they do not prorate.
Any luck on your end? Or if anyone else knows?
It worked!!

You might not need service. When I purchased my last BestBuy AT&T Pay in Full but requires activation phone... the terms said after 60 days of service. Now it says just 60 days from purchase date. So even better... might just need to wait 2 months and spend $0 extra.
Earlier this year I barely slid in the first scenario with a Fold3 from BestBuy with same AT&T new line/account discounted price. They changed the policy a few days after I bought it to needing 60 days of paid service.
You do have to cancel the service within like 3 days to get a full refund on activation and any service charge if I believe correctly (Google for your state as it might be different). If you port the number out to another service, it'll auto cancel too.

So far, the device activated. Best buy gave me a separate activation kit for some reason although the phone had a SIM card inside as well. I used the one Best Buy gave me separately.
I noticed that I got an email from ATT the day my device arrived at the store (yesterday) so I'm hoping the "3 day window" will start at yesterday at the latest despite experiences to the contrary here.
I ported from google voice, and the phone number is kind of active on both, but when I make calls from a mobile phone or texts from another mobile phone, the ported number appears to be working fine on AT&T. The port status says my previous carrier approved, but it's still showing in progress.
I put the SIM card in an unlocked phone - it took a long time to update on the myATT site. I logged out, rebooted the unlocked phone a few times, etc - I think it took about 2 hours to show up.
I had forgotten to update the OS. There are a lot of updates - I must have done 10 updates. I used a SIM from a work-issued ATT phone to do the updates. I had assumed it would roll to Android 14, but it didn't.
Maybe associating to another ATT account to the device screwed up the method. I wish I hadn't done that.
When I tried to unlock, I get "The device you want to unlock is active on another AT&T account. The account owner needs to remove the device from their account first."
When I went to plugin name/phone number/email again, I guess I took too long and it told me to start over...then I got the "you tried too many times. wait 24 hours." Welp I guess there's no doubt I'll pass 3 days now.
I wonder why this was so easy for some people. Hopefully the unlock will be smooth in 24 hours. Reading this thread and the other GadgetNerd thread, it looks like I might be on the hook for a month at $60 too. Ouch.

I tried eBay seller with paid unlock but unfortunately that was rejected with the same reason. I have no clue now, what to do with these phones other than waiting for a trade in deal next year. So be careful…
Edit: I think the important part is putting the at&t sim in an unlocked, paid off device. Before you tried the unlock request, did you see the unlocked device showing up in your account? It should have replaced the s22u, and it should say eligible for upgrade or something. Don't put the sim back into the s22u before you get the phone unlocked. And when you submit the unlock request make sure that you click the option "I don't have an at&t phone number" which prompts you to enter in the imei instead. Did you miss any of those?
