In case you are looking at this as a solution for streaming games from your desktop to another room, please be aware that GeForce Experience and Nvidia no longer support GameStream.

Sunshine and Moonlight are the server-client pair of apps you will want to use to do any LAN game streaming. They are relatively easy to set up, but it's something you should know about before purchasing if you intend to use this as a game streaming device.

As for performance, I have not had any issues at all with this model of Shield. I used it to replace the smart features on a 2016 Samsung TV that was getting progressively more annoying and losing support for applications like Twitch.
Isn't this like 6 years old?
I was a diehard Shield user. I switched to the Apple 4k. Did obsessive side by sides. In my experience, the apple has better color and picture quailty. Nothing is perfect as the sound quailty on the shield is better than apples 4k. I only stream no gaming.

Took advantage of this deal and set mine up yesterday. Could not be happier and I'm kicking myself I didn't grab this sooner. I made an MKV file of one of my 4K movie rip folders and the Shield Plex server streams it flawlessly via WiFi to a 1080p projector in my bed room. I used Lon Seidman's video on Shield Plex server setup: https://youtu.be/yaZkhiEYZFc?si=8VPZKVG9SnsUyLdN
So you're using the shield as a Plex server? But not taking advantage of all the AI upscaling and video output features currently? Like the Shield isn't connected to the HDMI of the projector?

There's a lot of things that can run a Plex server. The unique thing about the Shield is its ability to decode and output to a TV right? All that HDR and audio stuff?

Seems to be a laptop decoding issue. Even playing the file over the network with VLC I'm not able to decode it smoothly.
But _why_?

Is CPU maxed out?
Is network maxed out?

Open up task manager and have a look. See where your constraint is and where the problem is.

For example, if you copy it locally and it works fine, it's likely you have a network issue.
If you copy it locally and it still won't play, it's likely you have a CPU issue.
Confirm all of that within Task Manager.

How would a mini-pc/htpc do with upscaling content compared to a new apple TV device? Any AI upscaling for sdr/1080p content with a custom setup?

Thanks
I don't bother with upscaling since my personal opinion is "you can't make something out of nothing." So I can't speak to that question unfortunately. I watch 'natively' at whatever the given stream / source provides at maximum.

I love that s12 pro. I've used it as a plex server. Works great for transcoding too. Has a 4 k stream transcode and it can probably do a couple more.
What do you use to operate it ? Wireless keyboard/mouse?
yup, use a Pepper Jobs air mouse, <$30, works quite well.

No I have my Shield downstairs hooked up to my C6 OLED TV in my regular home theater setup. The main reason I wanted to get the Shield was to stream high quality transcoded 4K movie files via the built in Plex media server to my budget bed room projector. The projector maxes out at 1080p so the 4K streams are obviously being down converted to the projector but they still look amazing in my testing. I also have an HTPC in my down stairs theater so I am using the HTPC to convert my 4K ripped movie folders to mkv format and then transferring the resulting files over LAN to an external WD Elements hard drive attached to the Shield as described in Lon Seidman's how to video. I certainly intend to make use of the Shield's AI upscaling; last night I was watching a basketball game via the Bally Sports app and the AI upscaling was amazing! Hardly distinguishable from a true 4K broadcast!

Thanks for the details. How do you feel about the UI speed? Any glitches or slowness? I've heard mixed reviews about how well the UI works. Being older hardware with pretty middle of the road horsepower, that's one of my concerns.

I wonder how long Update 9.1 (Android 11) will continue to hold on... A10 ended 8 months ago; do we have 4 more months of A11 support?

https://endoflife.date/android

I like Apple's support update plans (basically, going on 7-8 years for most of their hardware, that's forever in computer years...)
Biggest gripe with apple is they slow down the device and force you to buy a new one. Apple also locks down the OS.

So does BMW! They 'time out' their batteries in their cars, reducing voltage over time to account for age, as older batteries really do have less voltage! What a scam! I need to get my money back!

I haven't noticed my AppleTV 4K slowing down. How would I check this, please? And even if it were slower (due to OS updates with more complexity and more features, you mean?) why would this 'force' me to buy a new one?

So many questions! Smilie

Almost the perfect device. But desperately needs a tech refresh. This is highway robbery for them to still be charging so much for this outdated streamer.

- No YouTube HDR
- No modern AndroidTV support for system level refresh rate matching
- Broken Dolby Vision 7/8 support, color reproduction issues ( red push )
YouTube HDR is an app issue not hardware issue.
What do you mean by broken Dolby vision ?

I would say the Shield UI is a tad slower than my 2017 Apple TV 4K streamer but certainly not enough of an issue to warrant any thoughts of returning it. The biggest annoyance to me so far is the pyramid shaped Shield remote. It feels clumsy in hand and I sometimes make mistakes when navigating the UI because of the very small center OK button…could be my fat fingers though. On a positive note the remote is back lit when the ambient light in your room lowers so that is a nice touch and not something you see in other competing streamer models. Regarding the Shield's Tegra processor I'm not buying the narrative that this is some old and slow CPU that needs to be immediately updated. No other streamer offers a built in Plex server that can stream 4K movies anywhere in your house via WiFi, assuming of course you have a robust mesh router setup like I do. That's pretty damned impressive to me! Having said all of the above however if your use case is streaming movies/TV shows only then I would say the Apple TV 4K is the better choice…just depends on your individual needs.

I mean it's not rendering the DV 7 /DV8 content faithfully, there are color errors. This translates to banding and oversaturated skin tones, green/cyan in the shadows where there shouldn't be. So as long as you accept this flaw sure it's a good player.

Illustration and explanation below:

Here's an explanation of the banding:

I'm torn about it. I already have a great server that serves up 4K video files. I just don't have anything good to play it at the TV.

Is there a good device to wirelessly stream movies on my PC to my TV? Could this be used for that?
