I have the pro for a year now. But sadly I use the firetv as my daily driver. The reason why I don't use it as much is because of RSS player is not allowed on this device.

I found a 2017 gaming edition on there with remote and controller, used, for $179. Is something like that too old to be useful, would I be better off to buy a new one?

Never used that app personally but would be really surprised if you couldn't sideload it. You can sideload most things onto the Shield.

Get a new one. Controller is nothing special, and the new remote is much better.

Just want to reiterate what TImless said. Get the newer one. I have maybe used the controller from my older shield twice and the remote on the newer model is night and day better than the older remote. Also, the newer model handles Dolby Vision and has the better upconversion.

A lot of people have Samsung TVs that don't support Dolby Vision so DV is not a selling point for all those people.
