Get HD650/HD6XX if you like bass. HD600 have less bass than both model. However, the sound is more netural and cleaner on HD600.
These don't have too much bass, but decent with an amp. These are some of the best headphones for music tho very accurate sound. After this it is so much diminishing returns.
These are wonderful headphones but quite light in the low end - in other words, do not expect any significant bass. HD 650 is better, but a closed design is required for good bass punch. Also, they have -zero- ambient noise isolation. It's like being open air. I tried to use them on a flight once and literally heard nothing over the engines.

Thanks for the detailed response. I don't trust RTING.com when it comes to gaming headphone recommendations; I have no idea what game they're playing or if they even play competitively at all.

As for amp, do you have one you like or recommend to drive the HD600s?
A good amp for the HD600 depends on what you are looking to do and what your budget is.
Used solid state amp very good for ALL headphones, look for Questyle CMA Twelve for $700 -$800. Note that it has a built in DAC and no input which can save money but can be a bottleneck down the line if you intend on getting high end DAC later.
New solid state amp budget amp pretty great for ALL headphones, Schiit Jotunheim 2 for $400.
If one wants new tubes, the transformer coupled Quicksilver Headphone Amp is going to drive almost all headphones to amazing performance but it will run $1,200.
If one is on a low budget and does not intend to acquire future headphones nor other headphone amplifiers, sticking with just one amplifier for the remainder of their lives, the Little Dot III can often be found under $300.
If one is not too into audio fidelity, one can still achieve great performance out of HD600 with one of the popular $100 headphone amplifiers and enjoy great sound. edit: JDS Labs makes a $99 Atom Plus amp that would suffice for many. https://jdslabs.com/product/atom-amp/

Oh, and even though I do not like the HD6XX very much. I am in the minority. I do think however most listening to them both side by side would pick the HD600 over the HD6XX. The HD600 has achieved legendary status at it price point.

Of my Sennheiser headphones I own Sennheiser Massdrop HD-58X Jubilee, Sennheiser HD-599, Sennheiser HD-280 (2016), Sennheiser HD-280 (original), Sennheiser HD-560S, Sennheiser PX-100, Sennheiser Massdrop HD-6XX, Sennheiser HD-600, Sennheiser IE-200
.
The Sennheiser HD599 are good but the Sennheiser HD600 is the better deal performance/$ over ANY Sennheiser headphone and most other dynamic driver headphones from other manufactures. HD600 is a high end heapdhone sold at a budget headphone price.

How do these compare to HiFiMan Sundaras? Worth investing in both? Used for gaming and music.
Dude, you have obviously done your homework. At the $300 price point the HiFiMan Sundara and the Senneheiser HD-600 are pinnacles of performance. One really should own both of these, one being dynamic driver and the other planar magnetic. If one were to purchase both of these they could happily live with just these two headphones with the assurance that they are getting the absolute best of both worlds for the $$$.

I bought a pair of 599 SE's for $79.95 earlier this year in March though which is why I'm debating on it.

I just plugged both into a $600 Singxer SA-1 amplifier and both sounded good. However HD-600 added realism to the instruments and I could hear more of the atmosphere reverberation which improved the perception of a grand sound stage. Absolutely worth the upgrade in my ears.
Ultimately, if you are already happy with what you may want save your hard earned cash. HD-599 has decent tonality and it plays louder at the same volume knob setting. In other words, I had to turn down the volume knob each time switching to the HD-599 since it is easier to drive. But it is a no brainier for those that do have the extra cash to get the HD-600 and experience better sound. Especially if one intends on eventually getting into tube amplifiers.

The lack of sound isolation goes both ways...it can be hard for the listener to hear, and hard for everyone else not to.

I prefer open back for private listening, closed or earbuds for listening in public or at library.

Thank you for this detailed response. I think for the person I'm talking about currently, they're not quite ready to step it up to the pro leagues with headphone amps more than the $100 range.

I appreciate that you provided a link do the JDS Lab's Atom Plus, I think its a fantastic little machine.

How would you compare it to something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Fosi-Audio...f9840&th=1

I'm not entirely sure how to compare different audiophile products when I don't have both to A/B at home...

I have no experience with the Fosi products. The JDS Labs would be a much safer bet. Or you could look out for a used JDS Labs for around $35 -$50 for a previous discontinued JDS Atom and you would be set. Old used Atoms go up for sale often on Head-Fi every once in a while.

I appreciate you following up w/ the feedback. If the price was around $200 then I might actually consider buying a pair of the Sennheiser HD 600's. I also own a pair of Sennheiser HD 595's which I bought from Amazon back in Feb 2011 for $98 which are still in good condition, and I'm not as much of an audiophile as I used to be back in the day so it really wouldn't burden me to do w/o the HD 600's.
