If you need a 4k monitor then this is not the one.
It's hard to go apples to apples.

This is OLED and it's a wider aspect ratio. You're giving up height and getting width. But this is an OLED panel - deeper blacks and better contrast/color representation, generally, than a similar LED.

4k is higher resolution and will improve some things - but you'll be able to run this monitor at a higher refresh rate and that will improve motion and perception of quality. 4K is hard for most graphics cards to push.

FWIW, I had the Samsung G7 4K monitor and returned it and replaced with this. I much prefer this from a picture quality standpoint.
Too bad cant use 10% email signup coupon but there is currently 18% CB and various AMEX offers..

well cosmetics make a difference don't they? regardless, it's a statement of fact. there are more differences than a g-sync module.

Additionally, LEDs are silicon... light emitting diodes, they are considered hardware.

The ability to update the firmware does not change anything about the hardware. Outside of the one having the gsync module and other other not having it. Hardware and software are different things.
is this a pedantic argument? being able to update firmware is absolutely massive as no firmware is bug free. if you're not able to update firmware, youre stuck with whatever glitches/bugs the g-sync model comes with.

Should I get this if for a gaming desktop with Nvidia 4090?
Yes. But it also depends on your setup and what else you do. To me an ultrawide is begging to be used as a multipurpose screen. Great for multitasking: snapping two browser windows to make the screen effectively become 2 screens. If you do that on a 16:9 monitor you will be forced to horizontally scroll on some websites (not good). These are also great for watching movies too. You can see films that were made to be wider than 16:9.

If the screen is only going to be used for gaming (console gaming + PC gaming) a 16:9 OLED could work just fine.

This is a very highly reviewed monitor. rtings basically lists it as the best overall monitor. TomsHardware ranks it in their top 3 monitors. Their favorite OLED monitor.

But the cashback at Dell is no longer 18%. That ended today,

Before anyone buys, they should read up on reviews about things, obviously. Poeple linked rtings, but I'll also link HUB:

https://www.youtube.com/@monitors...=alienware

Has comparisons between the old and new model, along with a "year later" update, and firmware update, and comparisons with other OLEDs as well, all in various videos.

OLED is amazing, yes, but I still don't think the tech is quite there yet for a desktop display (especially in modern Windows with M$'s bad font rendering). Maybe in 2024.

Also, for gaming and movie watching, get an ultrawide. 16:9 has been nothing but a downgrade ever since 16:10 monitors started going the way of the dodo. For desktop work, vertical space matters. Wish 21:10 monitors existed; best of both worlds...

I got myself an Amex card in anticipation of Black Friday, to get this Alienware monitor.

But looks like I don't have any Dell offers. Neither the $40 off $200 or $120 off $600.

Pretty bummed.

With the 18% cashback, it brings it down to around the same price (i.e. ~$660) as it was earlier this year. Difference is is there's now a $100 gift card, but people in the 38" Alienware thread I think are saying they are fighting dell for that gift card supposedly.
if its offered, the gift card just gets sent to your email as soon as you receive your item. only ever had an issue once with dell and a gift card offer but all i had to do was contact support -- then it got resolved in literally like 10 mins after checking my receipt / account etc...

now, make sure you are logged in when making the purchase because i wonder if that is possibly causing issues

Love this monitor for all gaming and I'm extremely picky about my monitor when it comes to gaming. I've had it for about a year and if anyone is wondering I still do not have any burn in.

- I turn it off when I don't plan to use it for an extended amount of time
- I'll activate the pixel refresh maybe once or twice a day, ignoring the 4 hour auto request
- I have wallpaper/background set to change every minute with shuffle on

Yeah, it's confusing why Dell did that. The 38" is not an OLED display, it's an IPS screen with LEDs.

Is the 38" a slick deal also?
I have one already and was wondering if it's worth running as dual.

The 38" screen comes with a $200 Dell e-gift card. Yesterday the 18% CB would have sweetened things a bit more. Today the CB is 10% at Dell. But yes, that's the best deal I've seen for that particular monitor.

It depends on the scale of "need" another monitor is to you. I've stayed away from that monitor because.... well, IPS LEDs have existed for over 10 years now. They've reached a peak. OLED raises the bar. Lots of new OLEDs are coming in 2024. I imagine IPS LEDs will get discounted more.

Here's RTINGS comparing the two monitors (that 38" IPS LED vs the 34" OLED)
