I have one died within a year due to overheat. It was replaced under warranty though. I think the USBc version at the same price is a better deal as it would work with most new phones and laptops that do not have USB A. They are less prone to overheat too by the design.
I think it is the form factor issue.
at this point, I really think they are making them as small as possible so you can lose them more easily

I've purchased maybe five of these (more like the 64 GB format because I'm cheap Stick Out Tongue and that's the only size I need ) which have worked well for me with one notable exception.

For some reason when I plug a usb 3.0 dock with a hard drive in it sometimes it will mess up the samsung drive and make it completely unusable.. samsung has been great about shipping out a replacement usb drive and didn't give me any hassles whatsoever about it, it's been a while but I think they either paid to have the defective drive sent back to me or they just didn't ask for it at all. You would want your original invoice but in this day and age it's easy to have a digital copy of it to begin with.

This probably isn't the best backup option Stick Out Tongue but any files I change or new files go on here and are backed up (in theory) by the backup solution I'm getting for free as part of other software I've purchased anyways, when the usb drive gets full I transfer the files to the aforementioned hard drive in a dock that's normally not kept connected to the PC (first making sure I eject and take out the samsung drive).. the cheap $11 for 64 GB version might be helpful as far as plugging it into family member's PC's, begging and pleading with them to please back up any files they change onto the samsung too and hoping they actually listen Stick Out Tongue

The small size of the samsung drive works for stupid people like me Stick Out Tongue who leave it in their PC all of the time and may forget it's there then try to move the PC, potentially snapping the thumb drive and/or the sata slot it's in .. but yep they are small and easily lost !

Does anyone know which tends to be faster and/or more reliable in a typical recent model laptop, a MicroSD card (assuming the laptop has a slot for one or for an SD card using an adapter), or a thumb drive of identical capacity and performance numbers from the same maker and line?

I'm asking because while my laptop has ample internal storage at 1TB, I'd like to add an external flash drive to hold my nearly 200GB photo collection so as to not use the internal storage, and am wondering if there's a meaningful difference between these two interfaces.

FWIW I have a Lenovo 13.3" 2 in 1 Yoga laptop with a MicroSD and 2 of each USB-A and USB-C slots.

The little blue, plastic Samsungs are awful for construction.
They come apart real easy and never go back tight
The back-end of the drive falls out and then the drive slides back and out.
You end -up with pieces and the back--end part is very small and super easy to lose

Not sure if I would use any flash drive to run an actual operating system EXCEPT I use this exact drive to run esxi
Been running for years now. ESXI loads in to memory so its not taxing the flash drive.

Wondering if this would be good to leave in the car radio for mp3s

Exactly how I use mine. Bigger drive is easy to hit and possibly break. This size significantly reduces that threat.

Thanks for the feedback! Speed and compatibility across devices are better though.

Depends on the microsd card slot read/write speed.

If laptop was reviewed by Notebookcheck.net, it'll tell you there.
