You need a casting rod to use this not a spinning rod.

Looking to surf fish from the shore in a few weeks for the first time. Would this be a nice choice for a starter reel? The information on Walmart only mentions fresh water use.

I wouldn't use something like this unless you are proficient with a bait caster and are careful with your gear. Dropping this in the saltwater and with sand is a recipe for disaster.

Best to start out with a spinning real if you've never done it before. The Stradic FL makes for an excellent surf fishing reel. If in SoCal you don't need bigger than 2500-3000
