Checking listed and solds on ebay there is an alarming number of this model listed right now for parts only with various problems like error codes.
It could be a good deal but it could be not great.

I miss the display of "Dolby Digital" - on the display when playing such content. Was a nice quick "yup, things are working' - now I need to hit an info button on the remote to check.
Menus and navigation are obviously very different. But not bad.
I have not browsed to the receivers web UI yet (different than the app) - that is supposed to have some important and handy settings only found there? Also web UI has a way to backup and restore settings? Will be nice for trying new settings and having a path to revert back.
I would say if just doing a swap - dont expect anything drastic changing with sound (coming from rx-v473).
UPDATE - had some more time to play. Really liking the new "full" sound I am getting turning on the center width. I have a very wide and close seating arrangement - this has really helped with dialog. I do find my sound stage having more ooph for some reason. Might be because i set my surround crossover @ 70 for everything.... was 80 or 90 on the Yamaha. The speaker calibration with mic wants it in the 50-60s.
Happy... just not blown away in awe... if anything it speaks to the quality of the Yamaha.
UPDATE: Not in manual... go to IP address of receiver... ###.###.###.###/websetup.htm --- to access webUi. if prompted for a username/password... its 'ciuser' for both. Not sure what new functions are here - but looks like just an easier way to manage things. You can also backup and update your configuration file. You can also print your current settings.
I do feel like maybe this is a bit light on bass and lows as others suggested. I think I can dial that in next... has not been my focus. Its fine - but I can tell it needs adjustment.
If this makes it so I am no longer battling settings to hear dialogue I will be very happy with this coming from the Yamaha.

I'm contemplating upgrading to a dedicated 5.1 or 5.1.2 and this would be the likely receiver I go with if I did.

I have heard people running a phantom center setup... no center to help with vocals. Adjusting the vocal tone up seems to get me close to that... but still a dedicated center.
Per manual...
--------
VOCAL button: Emphasizes movie dialogues
and music vocals to listen to them more easily.
It is effective to movie lines in particular. Also, it
exerts the effect even if the center speaker is not
used. Select a desired level from "1" (low) to "5"
(high).
1. Press VOCAL.
2. Press + or - to adjust.
• Depending on the input source or listening
mode setting, selection is not possible, or the
desired effect may not be achieved
----------
When i turn this up to 5 (max adjustment). I clearly hear vocals coming from all 3 front speakers. +5 is too much.... +3 seems to be the sweet spot for me.
UPDATE: Watching Avatar with my kid. Vocals are great. Using +3 setting on Vocal tone.. I asked if he found it easier to hear the talking than normal. He agreed. If I push it any higher and am sitting off center... the center and sides sound too similar. +3 the center is still dominant... but the extra vocals from left and right help me immensely.
Update: Dialed back a bit more to +2 on vocal tone.
