With that said, there are electric impacts now that take a lot of the duty away from the compressor. A pancake compressor of this size will easily power a framing nailer to build a garage or fence. With some patience you can even run a few high air demand tools. The downside is you will have to wait for it to recover, so you can only work a few seconds at a time at high airflow.
I have this compressor. It's a great start for a DIYer. I started with worse using some no name that came with a nail gun.
I recommend you get electric tools where it makes sense if you don't want a massive shop compressor.
Here's a chart that shows you the CFM needed to run various pneumatic tools at 25% duty cycle:

Sorry, I just assumed it was common well known problem. But if you purge, you've probably never noticed it.
I have purged once in 5 years. So far, so good.
Question is, is it supposed to leak air? It has never kept compression for more than a couple days.
Is it defective? Or normal? What can be done to fix it?
Easy stuff first, but thanks for the suggestion.

Do NOT get "reconditioned" stuff from them. Too many horror stories.
We've gone over this like 5 million times at this point: 'Factory blemished' = new.
