For mechanical work, you'd ideally want at least 10 gallons (and bigger is better) with at least 4CFM of airflow (with more better).

With that said, there are electric impacts now that take a lot of the duty away from the compressor. A pancake compressor of this size will easily power a framing nailer to build a garage or fence. With some patience you can even run a few high air demand tools. The downside is you will have to wait for it to recover, so you can only work a few seconds at a time at high airflow.

I have this compressor. It's a great start for a DIYer. I started with worse using some no name that came with a nail gun.

I recommend you get electric tools where it makes sense if you don't want a massive shop compressor.

Here's a chart that shows you the CFM needed to run various pneumatic tools at 25% duty cycle:

I've never had a compressor nor used one. What's a good gallon size for a DIY'er? I do light mechanic work on vehicle and and would like to use air gun and sorts.

Purge after ever use and leave the valve open when empty.
Well, if I purge after every use, it will never leak cause the tank is empty. Problem solved?

As for the leak, no it shouldn't leak and hard to say what can be done about it without knowing the location...is it leaking from a fitting?
Sorry, I just assumed it was common well known problem. But if you purge, you've probably never noticed it.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. Leaving your compressor at pressure traps accumulated moisture inside the steel tank, which leads to rust. The tanks are unlined and oxidation develops quickly. Is it the source of your leak? Maybe not, but purging will lengthen the life of your tank.

Doubtful it is rust cause it leaked from the day I bought it. But thanks for your suggestions.

I have purged once in 5 years. So far, so good.

I've had this model for ~5 years, believe it was $65 slickdeal.

Question is, is it supposed to leak air? It has never kept compression for more than a couple days.

Is it defective? Or normal? What can be done to fix it?
I've found most leaks tend to be if you leave a hose attached or the nozzle itself. Get some soap for bubbles or a bot of gas leak detector.

I already tested the connectors with soapy water and unplugged the cheap hoses. NADA.
Easy stuff first, but thanks for the suggestion.

Anyone know if this is good for blowing out an 8 zone sprinkler?
Very doubtful, the air volume is seriously deficient for that task. I have seen lawn sprinkler contractors use large truck-mounted or even tow-behind comps.

not this, this compressor is more for air nailers. if you want to run an impact and air hammer you want a minimum of 5cfm @ 90psi 24-32 gallon @ 110v or if you have the space run a 220v 60 gallon
So this isn't good for using the airgun to blow dry?

For very short bursts it will work. Beyond that, no, far too small.

Decent little compressor, I picked up a 30 gal craftsman to replace it but honestly at times I wonder why I even own a compressor, other than the tornado gun for interior cleaning and the HF engine cleaner and rarely a small scale sand blaster it's not really that useful with modern battery impacts/ratchets/etc, air hammer and paint gun are probably the only two big tools you'd want a compressor for, it'll run an air hammer for short bursts, but won't really be useable for painting a car or anything on that scale. It does excel at airing up tires though...

Do not get the refurbished if you want the lifetime warranty. The factory blemished is LSA covered tho

It has a "RIDGID 3-Year Limited Warranty". No Lifetime Service Agreement (which is the primary reason I buy Ridgid). I'm out!
one the RIDGID reply in QA from 7/23/23 says it qualifies for LSA, also the bundle with 3 nailers have LSA. so it is quite confusing on the LSA for this product.

I bought a table saw from them. The "blemished" products are pretty much brand new.
Do NOT get "reconditioned" stuff from them. Too many horror stories.
And by "pretty much brand new" you mean 'brand new' lol?

We've gone over this like 5 million times at this point: 'Factory blemished' = new.

I bought a refurbished Sawzall and it was broken upon arrival and wouldn't accept return. Only get new now and nothing from them.

This is a low scfm tank. You will be limited on the tools you can run. Look into scfm as that dictates what you can use the tank for.

This is a good compressor. Only issue for me is condensation from the compressed air. This will cause rusting in the tank. I planned to add a moisture filter but never got to it yet.
