Update: Added YMMV to the title. My order got cancelled, but I was able to place it again. We'll see if this actually works...

Best Buy has a HP Victus 15.6" Gaming Laptop on sale for $500 new or $426 open-box in excellent condition, with free 3-day shipping on either option.

I've seen slicker deals than this for a new model (it was $450 around Black Friday), but I've never seen an open-box unit in excellent condition for this price with free shipping. Best Buy open-box models are usually YMMV and in-store pick up only, so a free shipping option is a sweat deal while it lasts.

The general consensus from previous discussions on this computer was that it's a decent deal if you are willing to make some performance trade-offs for cost savings. The RAM and SSD storage are upgradable, and if you upgrade the memory then this should be able to run modern games, but AAA games may need to be on low or medium settings.

The weakest aspect of this is the RTX 2050 graphics card. That's a budget model and an older generation, but it's held up decently well time and still has acceptable performance if you're willing to make some compromises. Other cons are that the screen is only 250 nits and it doesn't support USB-C charging (and it's unclear from the description whether the USB-C can be connected to a monitor).

All-in-all, this seems like a decent value if you are willing to trade performance for a lower cost or just want to get the cheapest possible gaming laptop available today. If you can wait for a better deal or are willing to spend a bit more for better performance, you may want to hold out for something better.

An old deal - got the open box-fair one for a bit less.

It's a decent machine for a good price. Just add extra memory.

To clarify, I think I've seen similar open-box prices before but not with shipping available. In the past, the open-box prices were only available if there was in stock near you for store pick-up. So it's no longer YMMV.

(I've been watching for a while because I want to get a nice gift for my son's 13th birthday, and have been looking for a low price on a reasonably decent laptop. This seems in line with with some similar previous deals, but easier to obtain).

New had been available for $449 and $479. Even currently it's for $499.

Might as well get a new one. This is not a deal.
