I know there are a lot of fans of the Lx-505, the Onkyo, and the similar integra models. After months trying when they were all released I managed to get the Pioneer. I was replacing an x4100 Denon in a 5.1.4 setup. I built the room for high quality sound and to spec with Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro 3D.

I even bought the higher end tuning mic for Dirac and the special mic stand. I got deep into all of the tuning curves, laptop software, and all that jazz well before actually getting the receiver. For months I combed AV forums to get tips and expert advice.

In the end, in spite of days of tuning and tweaks, I returned the Pioneer. The Pioneer's sound was just flat compared to my older Denon. The 3 dimensions of sound were just 2D and too crisp. I thought for sure I got a defective Pioneer and after returning it, continued searching obsessively for any one of these three extremely similar models.

I was on the Crutchfield waitlist for a few months and finally got the Onkyo. I hooked it up. Did all the initial, standard calibration but got the exact same result. I did the curves and tweaked and tweaked. Things changed but never got close to my older Denon. Just flat sound that made me sad. I ended up returning the Onkyo too. It killed my soul.

So now I have the Denon x4700. It sounds amazing like my x4100 but a little better. The new Denon has some features my old Denon did not and that were critical at my house - having volume control on-screen and being able to turn everything on and off with a simple remote.

I'm not arguing with all the people who love these receivers. On paper they look awesome. My experience was less than awesome, but what pleases people's ears is ultimately a very personal experience and wanted to share mine.

That being said. This Pioneer is still a quality receiver and at this price definitely a slick deal. But I'll warn you not to invest as much time as I did trying to tweak it if you aren't impressed after your first calibration. Tweaking helped but in my case did not work out.

Hard to imagine a 30 year AV hobbyist that never tried using external amps with an AVR.

Why does it seem like each receiver has one glaring missing feature that keeps it from being the perfect receiver? I was just about to pull the trigger on this until I read the complaints about it having universal crossover.
The power limiting is a way bigger deal than a global crossover, which is pretty overblown. I'm not sure why the former is discussed less.

Same boat. Literally hooked everything up an hour ago. I realize I can "google it" but what's your reasoning for dropping another $100 and grabbing the 505?
I went from a Kenwood VR-207 to a Onkyo NR717. I'd rather not go from 120W to 100W a channel with the 503.

That is a synthetic bench test, it should not occur in a real-world scenario. I can tell you this receiver is legit. If you put this Pioneer into protection mode, you just saved yourself from blowing your speakers.

How is this compared to Denon X3800H for a 5.2.4 setup?
Please advise
It depends on what features are important to you.

This has Dirac Live included in the price and 15 more watts.
It doesn't offer Dirac Live Bass Control, 2 sub outs are parallel/mono, global crossovers, all channels aren't assignable, no preamp mode.

The 3800 includes a comparable RC to Dirac in XT32 in the price, offers both Dirac Live & DLBC as a purchase option, 4 independent sub outs, independent crossovers, all channels assignable & preamp mode.
It's listed 15 watts lower though.

Here is a comparison of them of all their features.

I'll check those links out, but are you sure you configured your arrangement? ie 5.1.4, 7.1.2 etc. on your AVR. (And on dirac) that's what it sounds like if dirac doesn't see it.
Trust me, I've spent more time than I should have making the decision on this receiver and home theater has been a hobby of mine for over two decades. Yeah I'm running a 5.2.2 Klipsch Reference Premier setup from this AVR and it sounds great to me, and better than the cheaper Denon it replaced. RP-280F mains RP-450C center, RP-150M rears and RP-140SA for Atmos. Read up on Dirac, there is no way a company like Pioneer is going to sell a product that doesn't cross over the speakers correctly, or cause damage to speakers. Also this Power limiting feature is a good thing. The people dissing on that and the universal cross over are looking for reasons to crap on this AVR. If you do proper research and understand Dirac it will make a lot more sense. At first I was put off by that review, but after reading up, there is no sound quality problems with those supposed 'issues'.

Do you see any reason to upgrade from a Marantz Sr6011 to this? Using all 11 channels(with an emotiva amp) on it in a 7.2.4 configuration and I am quite happy with it. Unsure marantz 6011 to this is an upgrade except that this is newer and with more tech, hence the question. Also, have been wanting to try Dirac live since it came out.
Unless your main concern is budget and need the added features not sure it's gonna be an audible upgrade especially if you prefer Marantz imo.
Here is a comparison of the two.
https://www.zkelectronics.com/com...h-america/

Keep in mind you lose independent crossovers, independent sub outs, assignable channels, lose XT32 and options that gives you.
I would point out also channels 10 & 11 on this can not be assigned.
You would have to use two of the amps on the Emotiva to power them, they can't be powered internally.

If you prefer Marantz & interested in Dirac.
If you are open to manufacturers refurb from an authorized dealer.
I would suggest considering the Cinema 50 for $1349 @ AC4L.

Recently setup one with both Dirac RCs(DL/DLBC) and was pretty impressive.
He had it for a while and took advantage of the recent 30% discount for Dirac.
We had it dialed in pretty good with XT32 +Editor App but sale price for Dirac was well worth it in both our options!
Hope this helps good luck.

Klipsch premium deal for $1499 would go prefect with these

Have not bought from AC4L before, see some concerning reviews about them online. Any opinions on that? Good price on the cinema 50 although refurbed. Do you think it will sound better than the 6011, or you mean buy it from the added features and newer hdmi version perspective. Plus I cannot convince myself to pay for Dirac, and hence wanted to try this Pioneer. At the same time, I also don't know if I'd like the signature of pioneer vs marantz as I haven't listened to the former before. I have all lsims for the ground support, so singular crossover should do okay, except for the jbl ceiling speakers. 80 hz should be okay for those too, not too concerned either way. Have ample number of amp channels, so assignability also not a concern. Btw, thanks for all the info you share here. I find your posts very helpful and matter of factly.

Never bought from them but know some that have with no issues.
Even in here many have with no issues.

Will you here a $1349 difference, very unlikely but then imo you only upgrade when you need a new feature not to improve sound.

TBH honest you do pay for Dirac on this, it's just rolled into the price.
Most of these excluded features I mentioned were added to the new Pioneer/Onkyo's and look at those prices.
Keep in mind Dirac Live does not include there sub/bass integration RC.
From personal experience, their description of what it offers/benefit is pretty spot on.
https://www.dirac.com/live/bass-control/

You might want to look at the Editor App and MulitEQ-X, It will give you all the capabilities of Dirac without buying another receiver & a faction of the cost.

How would this compare to my denon S760 which has 75 watts per channel in my 5.2.2 Klipsch reference premier set up?

They will. I did it with Yamaha. Of course depends on the person you get.
