These are pretty effective on their own. I've had them on for years with very little buildup on a car that previously made a lot of the blue-green crystallization. The manufacturer recommends spraying some of this NCP2 spray over the wire end and terminal once bolted together. I've always skipped their cleaner and just used a wire brush with good results.

This is probably a lifetime supply for an average user:

It's also sold as a kit like this:

You unbolt the wire terminal end. This little oiled felt washer sits on the battery. Then you bolt the wire terminal end back on. Most batteries are a 10mm socket. Takes a minute or two.

If you have side posts, the washer is perforated to tear out the smaller ring for the smaller terminals.

That's really helpful. I have to say, I started buying AGM batteries a very long time ago, and somewhere in there I just stopped using things like this and had no major effects. But every time I touch a vehicle with a flooded battery, it's a mess.

So these are helpful for the regular batteries but unnecessary for AGM ones, right?

I'd say correct. AGMs are said to not corrode like a flooded lead-acid battery. Most cars still have a lead-acid battery, but this is changing rapidly as manufacturers put batteries in unusual places, like under seats.

If I had a vehicle exposed to salt like a wintry environment or driving on a beach, I'd probably spray the posts anyway. I've seen a few cars not start when the battery terminal looked just fine. Removed terminal, brushed, and reinstalled and started right up.

I don't know why it happens, but I've always found it vehicle dependent. My wife's car has a lead-acid battery and it makes very little corrosion. On the other hand, we've got a Honda with a fuse block mounted directly to the positive terminal, and that thing will grow crystals rapidly without protection. AGMs are awesome. Had to use them on a couple sports cars. Just wish they weren't selling for around $250 now.

I'm not going to say that - you should probably keep an eye on things. But the washers are generally for fumes leaking from around the posts, and if you need anything at all with an AGM battery, the spray is probably more helpful.

I had one car where these ended up being too thick, so they did not allow the terminals to seat properly. (It might have been on a Ford Flex.)
Depending on the geometry of the battery electrodes (which are generally slightly tapered) in conjunction with the tolerances of the cable terminals (and the wear and tear of each, from corrosion, etc.), these pads can get in the way -- ever so slightly -- of being able to seat the cable fully, and/or become loose over time.
That said, I have used these pads dozens of times on lots of vehicles and they only got in the way on one car. YMMV

Technically probably are. However they're impregnated with chemicals that prevent corrosion and neutralize acid that may vent from the terminals (my understanding). So yes, reusable, but probably going to lose efficacy over time.

I think I bought a similar package from a local store and it also had a grease that came with it that you're supposed to apply to the terminals on top of the leads once it's installed.

I just took care of all of this a couple days ago. Discovered my Frontier has the standard 10mm on the negative terminal but a 9mm on the positive terminal. Possibly because the positive has one of those fuse blocks on it. The wife's Outback was 10mm on both terminals though.

Is there any reason to use this if you have a 12v Lithium battery?
