Apple continues to artificially limit non-pro cpus to force an upgrade to pro if you want multiple external displays. I really like my apple products but the fact that non-pro laptops can't support multiple monitors out of the box like a $300 Windows laptop is asinine.
It's shameful that anyone is selling a laptop with only 8GB of non-upgradable RAM these days. Memory requirements only go up over time, life expectancy for most laptops is at least 3-4 years, and 8GB is already too little. Ina couple years anyone who bought only 8GB (especially on a "Pro" device) is going to be hating life.
Hard to justify when the 8GB, 256GB model is on sale for $1000. At this level we aren't doing the super high end stuff so I'd rather pay a bit more for high end or pay a bunch less $1000 for a laptop that is still very awesome

Not sure if it will go any lower given the specs. I just ordered the midnight version. Upgrading from a MacBook Pro 2016 i5.

Picked one up yesterday. Going to use it for travel. My MBP 16 is too damn heavy. Great deal.

OK, well I'm glad your personal preferences make the opinions of all tech reviewers and millions of laptop buyers like myself useless. Cheerio!
What are you on about? Your opinion is the one that differs from the consensus. Every tech reviewer I've seen and the general public values MiniLED and high refresh rate over an extra inch, especially combined.

Just look at them side by side man. It's not rocket science.

Oh, now reviewers' opinions matter again?

I was just offering my own experience, which happened to stand in contrast to yours. For whatever reason you felt the need to invalidate my view, and act like your view was the only possible correct one. You could have just respectfully disagreed and left it at that. This is a deal discussion thread where varied experiences should be encouraged. If you think your opinion is the only one that matters, go start a blog instead.

Not magically. Apple built their hardware and their OS. They dictate the rules to be followed such as memory allocations and clean-ups. Windows does not have much control over hardware and applications. Most Windows laptops come with bloatware while Macbook comes completely clean. You buy the laptop, not the adware or bloatware, and the performance stays consistent until the end of its life. I am still using my Macbook Pro from 2014. Another very simple example, Windows major patches have a tendency to remove AMD Catalyst software and replace the driver with Window's. It has been going on for a long while and still happening. (PA-300 error). I had to disable Windows from doing it from the registry and it still does it occasionally. As you can see, Windows unable to sort out simple issue like this. Why in the world Windows go in and replace AMD drivers on its own?? Anyway, the screen will go blackout or blinking. So, reinstalling AMD software will fix it. This will NEVER happened in Mac because they are Apple own the hardware, OS and tested their own QA in their own confined environment where everyone else is using on the same setup. How does it goes wrong when people using the same exact setup tested in the exact same environment ? So, it is not magically, it common sense really ...
My M1 MBA used 4.1GB RAM with only istatmenu running. So I only have 3.9 GB free RAM left to use. My windows show 6.7GB in use with more background tasks including Norton antivirus, iCloud, WD discovery, Lenovo Vantage, etc., but I have 16GB total RAM. I still have 5.4 GB more ram left on windows than Mac.

From my test, Firefox and Chrome use similar amount of RAM on windows and mac. So I don't think Mac use less RAM for extra apps user run.

Overall Windows still win with extra RAM installed. And I can easily swap it to 32GB for $50.

I have a barely used Intel Core i5 10th generation 16GB/512GB MacBook Pro from 2020. In hindsight, I made the mistake of not waiting for 6 more months before M1 came out.

This laptop, when I bought it, was $1500 but I had several thousand dollars expiring in card points, so ultimately I paid $900 out of pocket. I would never have bought a MacBook Pro for what "I" do (which is 90% of us - basic laptop use, shopping, paying bills, listening to music, media consumption, nothing too crazy) for $1500 because any cheaper laptop could do all these things and then some.

Then why did I even spend the $900? Well, this was my first MacBook, I wanted to experience MacOS, and literally no other laptop offered the kind of loudspeakers, build quality, and keyboard and touchpad experience like MacBook Pro. To this day, these are my most favorite parts about owning this MacBook Pro.

What I absolutely hate about this Intel based MacBook Pro is thermals. The laptop always runs hot, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It was like this on day 1. And of course, the TouchBar is a mild annoyance but everyone hates on it anyway.

I am now at crossroads - should I get what I can (about 700 bucks cash at Best Buy or maybe 800 from a private party but even that's a bit of a stretch) and go to a 15" Air or 14" Pro?

The prices on these newer laptops are eye watering though! A 15" Air with merely two USB ports and no multi-screen support with 16 RAM and 512 storage cannot cost $1600, it's highway robbery to me.

Ugh.Wish they wouldn't force the 1TB storage. Don't need anywhere near that much. Would rather save the $150 or whatever.
